Title: Brass Band in Ferniegair/Hamilton
Post by: doolittle72 on Monday 04 May 20 10:02 BST (UK)
Does anyone know of a brass band in Ferniegair or Hamilton around 1920's?  My father was a miner, born 1902, lived in Ferniegair and played cornet in a brass band according to my cousin who was born in 1921 - and spent a lot of time with my grandparents.  I have a photograph of him with a group of snooker players around that time and would love to know (and have any photographs) of a brass band.

There were several Salvation Army bands about,  although how that ties in with snooker is a mystery.

I am finding out more about my father who died when I was young.  He was a coal miner like his father and brothers and became a fireman.  He is said to have said he had to crawl in 18 inches of space when it was flooded for a distance of up to Larkhall. I don't know what pit he was employed in but I suspect it was the Ross.   They lived in the Rows until they were re-housed in Allanton Terrace.
What I have found since starting my family history journey is that his grandfather was a miner and many generations going back in time and that his grandfather's brother and brother-in-law were both killed in the Blantyre Pit Disaster, his brother leaving a sick wife (who died within two weeks of the event) and a small daughter, brought up by her grandparents.
This has nothing to do with snooker, other than miners had other interests.

It would probably be a colliery band I would think.

This directory might be worth a look at www.academia.edu/38588816/Brass_Bands_of_Scotland_a_Historical_Directory

Just for background, a story from the Daily Record www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/real-life/musical-miners-carry-on-near-140-year-old-1388129
