Hi,
I am trying to find the marriage between -
Hannah Elizabeth Palmer (abt 1874 Little Melton, Norfolk)
George Argent (abt 1865 Tilbury, essex)
I have them on the 1891 census living with her parents in Islington, though they are from Norfolk originally. So I expect the marriage to be recent to then.
I have them again on 1901 census in Hampstead with their children, although she goes by Elizabeth on that not Hannah
She later re marries after George dies, her second marriage is easy to find but not her marriage to George.
I want to send for the marriage certificate as I need to know the name of Georges father, so I have any hope of tracing the Argent line.
Thank you,
Ju1

Is she shown as a widow on her second marriage?
When did George die?
-
I have only seen the entry on the register, it gives her name as Hannah Elizabeth Palmer not her married name of Argent.
She marries Robert Ernest Custance in 1909 in Lincoln
She is with him and her children to George Argent on the 1911 census in Lincoln
I have not found a death for George.

Reads like there is no "Argent" marriage if the Custance marriage is in her maiden name.
1901 for reference. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X98X-X84
I CANNOT find the 1891?

Isn't the second marriage entry a giveaway??
She married Custance as Palmer - not Argent
Snap Pauline!!
-
They have 5 children together.
On Ancestry there are other trees with the family in,they give a different person as George's wife, they state Elizabeth Emily Morley, there is a marriage for them. I thought they may be right but when I searched for the birth of the youngest son Thomas Henry Argent 1904 Langport the GRO shows mothers maiden name as Palmer.
Hence me looking for a marriage.
How do I link the 1891 census entry for you?
-
1891 entry is no longer relevant - if you buy her 1909 marriage cert it will probably show her as a spinster - not a widow
-
Aha so you are suggesting they never married, she just took his name?
Sorry I have been a bit bit slow here, it never occurred to me!
Thank you

I CANNOT find the 1891?
Pauline, they are at ref RG 12/154 /11 /16

If you look for a death for George - his birthyear & birthplace differ between 1891 - 1901
1891 b 1870 Grays
1901 b 1865 Tilbury
-
In 1901 - son Edward George is in Derbyshire with his Palmer grandparents
May be a coincidence but there is a George Argent death in Derbyshire in 1952 - born 1871
Also one in Chelmsford in 1947 - born 1871
-
Of course, so she probably left George for new hubby, so that's why no death for George around that time.
Thank you, this has been most enlightening.
