Does anyone know how long after the event that led to someone being mentioned in despatches and their superior mentioning them in their report, it would have been published in the Gazette?
I have been looking at the ship my ancestor was on on the date of the Gazette supplement but he was on a different ship a couple of weeks before and I'm wondering if it could have been on here that whatever occurred that led to his mention happened?

Could be 2 to 3 months before. Take a look at the beginning of the list he is on, there is sometimes an indication of a time frame there. If it is an enormously long list then it covers quite a time frame.
What was his number and name?

Hi
Not quite sure of the relevance of the following, perhaps one of the "ships" mentioned was a submarine? I m sure someone will know.
He is mentioned towards the bottom of this page.
A couple of paragraphs after the heading 30363 30th October 1917 https://www.naval-history.net/WW1NavyBritishLGDecorationszzMentions.htm
Honours for services in submarines.
Mentions in dispatches in recognition of their services in submarines in enemy waters.

Here is a page with a few of the ships names that are on his service record https://shilstonfamily.wordpress.com/royal-navy-ships-george-served-on/submarines-service-5/

A particularly good spot Cathy, brilliant! Totally relevant.
Nats 185 - a good demonstration that this, like many MiDs was not for one single act but for sustained excellent service in a particular field over a particular period of time.

Wonderful thank you both, I didn't realise a MID could be for general good service. I know that he worked on various submarine depot ships as I have gone through every ship on his naval record!

Depot ships acted as the accounting base for the submarines they looked after and it was normal for a seaman's record to show the depot ship. See for example HMS Arrogant and Maidstone which have in brackets C 19 , this is submarine C 19 in which he was serving and HMS Vulcan where he is reserve submarine crew.
Ship locations for 1 October 1916 show C 19 with HMS Arrogant https://www.naval-history.net/WW1NavyBritishShips-Locations2PL1610.htm with the 5th Submarine Flotilla on the Dover Patrol.
He was a submariner but unfortunately, the boat in which he was serving isn't shown each time on the record.
