Title: West Ham Essex School Rugby Team 1928
Post by: Quinnh on Tuesday 28 April 20 11:04 BST (UK)
Hello Everyone, I hope you are keeping safe  :)
I hope it is ok to post this picture.  My Grandfather Leslie Alfred James is sat in the front row 3rd from right.  He was born in Sixth Avenue Manor park in 1912.  Can anyone tell me which school this was?  The Memories of manor park facebook group thought it was coopers company school but after contacting them apparently it is not.  Any idea?  Many thanks in advance!

Is it possible to get a close up of the badge on the hat of the boy wearing the cap.

Sixth Avenue in 1912 was in East Ham Urban District, now London Borough of Newham.

The photographer’s address - commercial road is in Tower Hamlets — Borough of Stepney (I think) when the photo was taken.

I would be inclined to contact. London Borough of Newham Local Studies Library

And Tower Hamlets Local Studies

To see if either can add anything.

The attached contains information on schools in the West Ham area.  The fact that this photo is of a rugby team makes me believe it’s a grammar school,  faith school or something  similar.  Which makes me wonder he may have traveled to get to school. Just to get a school with enough land to have playing fields.
