Title: Burial of William SMITH
Post by: Westy11 on Monday 27 April 20 04:31 BST (UK)
Hoping for some assistance to determine if there is/was a memorial inscription for William SMITH whose remains were interred in St Thomas a Becket Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire 11 Jul 1790.  I know very little about the family to date other than that William lived in St Martin's Parish.  It seems William was financially comfortable hence thinking he may well have had a headstone.

The reason is I am attempting to discover if William’s wife is interred with him or near him.  I know neither the date of her death or her name.

I think she was deceased before William’s death as she was not mentioned in his Will.  William made provision for his three daughters; Lucy, Harriet and a daughter who married a SHIPLAND and who is deceased prior to 1790.  The SHIPLAND children were mentioned as John SHIPLAND, Peter Winwood SHIPLAND and Lucy SHIPLAND.

I cannot locate baptisms for the three children and at this point in time a little lost as to a way forward hence the shot in the dark hoping some one has access to the burial records for St Thomas.

His eldest daughter Lucy married William BOWEN in 1776 so assuming Lucy was between 20 - 25 years of age at marriage indicating a birth around the 1750.  This would then indicate a possible marriage for William SMITH also around the 1750's but this is just supposition.

William BOWEN was born 28 Mar 1748 lending some credibility to a birth around this time for his wife, Lucy SMITH.

Peter, no worries at all.

I thank you for your input and efforts on my behalf.  I meant to say earlier that the burial you located for William SMITH of St Martins, buried 11th July 1790 is mine so thank you..

In considering the marriage I think it was too late but I will keep it in mind.

I think based on my ballpark calculations the marriage would have occurred around 1750's.

I have been unable to locate any record for a baptism for William's children, nor a marriage for his daughter whose was the mother of William's SHIPLAND grandchildren.

I am now wondering if perhaps the marriage and births occurred perhaps in England rather than Wales but I don't know.  Entering the children's names into Anc and FindMyPast gives me nada so I am just not sure what I am missing.

I will give FamilySearch a go and see what transpires.

Many thanks Peter.

I thought the 1773 marriage might have been a clue to the death of his first wife.

I think the surname of the son in law is Shopland.

Marriage in Bideford Devon by licence 3 March 1779 of John Shopland otp and Mary Ann Smith of St Thomas, Haverfordwest. Witnesses John Dunn, parish clerk & J Jewell schoolmaster.

baptisms in the same parish to John & Mary Ann
John Smith Shopland 5 Jan 1780
Lucy 21 Dec 1781

Haven't spotted Peter as yet but there was a burial 6 Aug 1790 in Landcross of a Peter Winwood Shopland, indexed as 1611 on FindMyPast for some reason.
Just found Mary Ann Shopland buried 30 March 1788 also indexed as 1611...

the Landcross register is a bit of  a mess.

John Smith Shopland aged 2 was buried 19 Oct 1781
Mary Ann Shopland buried 28 Feb 1786

perhaps one of the Mary Anns was a child but not noted.

Marriage by licence 30 April 1804 in Bideford William Short Tyeth and Lucy Shopland, witnesses John & Jane Shopland, all signed.
Possible marriage in Bideford 25 Oct 1794 John Shopland, gent, & jane Crealock both otp

came from the Wales parish registers on Findmypast. I looked at the register for one son and found the family page.   :D

Do you have the death of William Bowen in Bristol in 1826? Quaker burial for non member noted as of Tenby. PCC will mentions second wife Elizabeth.

Thank you so much Osprey.  A great find.

As to William's burial - Yes thank you Osprey.  William was born into the Quaker faith and married outside.

I have to locate his second marriage with Elizabeth GOUGH.  So far I located one child to this couple William Musgrave BOWEN  bap 7 May 1816.

that's quite a gap between marriage & birth of William Musgrave. None in Pembs. There are 2 couples called William & Elizabeth Bowen baptising children, one in Bridell, one in Bosherton. Both Williams shown as labourer when occupations given on register. Similar in Carmarthenshire, the William in Llanarthney is a carpenter, other one is a farmer.

True.  The name is one that started in 1650 and continues to this day plus he is mentioned in his father's Will. :)

He is also in a Family Bible.

Warm regards,
