Title: William Friar / Fryer / Frier of Chester, born circa 1791
Post by: History Lives on Tuesday 21 April 20 17:07 BST (UK)
I am looking for the baptism and death records for William Fryer / Friar / Frier who married Catherine Briscoe in St Oswald's parish, Chester, in 1808.

They had the following children:

Elizabeth
William
Henry
Ann
John
George
Mary
Jane

Also born in Chester.

He is recorded on the 1841 census as born in the county of Cheshire, and his surname as Frere, though died before the next census. In 1851 Catherine was living in the poor house with her son, also called William Fryer.

Unless I am not checking another possible spelling variation for his surname, I can't find a valid death in Chester for him between the two censuses.

Any help appreciated.

Have you checked the Cheshire Registers on FindMyPast and Deceased Online?

In 1851 Catherine Fryer is shown as 'Marr.' not a widow!

Family search, Findmypast, Deceased Online. Found a death of a William Fryer aged 81 in 1840 in Chester but this can't be the right William.

I think the Catherine and William in 1851 (paupers) are actually your couple as William is shown as married too.

Looks like she was a few years older than him - 73 in 1851, he 64 in 1851 (both shown as 50 1841).

Their deaths:

William Fryer Sept.1855 Great Broughton - aged 68

Catherine Fryar Jun.1860 Great Broughton - aged 81.

Great Broughton being the registration district for the poor house.

So, William Fryer bc.1787 and Catherine bc.1779.

His age in 1851 transcribed as 54, not 64, but think this is an error.   The figure transcribed as '5' does not look like the other '5's' on the page and sure it should be a '6' as the death entry in 1855 would seem to confirm.

In that case, he’s buried in Overleigh. Died age 68 in the House of Industry 17 Aug 1855.
Buried in paupers mass grave 20 Aug1855.

Thanks all, William being Catherine's husband rather than son, makes sense as there is a relevant death for their son William in 1828.

As for the birth record for the older William. Any finds?

I think William may be the son of William and Martha Friar, as there are other Friars born in Chester with those parents and obviously family names are always common. Can't find a baptism for William but there's Ann in 1797 and John in 1786.

Need to fill in the blanks for children too:

Can anyone find Henry Friar born 1817, or John Friar born 1825 on the 1841 census in the Chester area, or a dearth before the census?

Also looking for Ann Friar born 1822 on the 1841 census, she married William Campbell in Liverpool in 1846. There is one at Boughton and one at Mickle Trafford but can't figure out which is right.

Also Jane Friar born 1830, who is with parents on the 1841 census but may have married or died before 1851.
