Me again.
I know who this, but would like to get a rough date so I can ascertain her age. I have a number of photos of Annie and just wondering where to slot this one in.
Sorry, I don't have the back of the photo.
Many thanks
Caz

Lovely image Caz, my guess would be early 1890s.
Edit: Looking again at the sleeves, I think it's later, Edwardian

Is she holding something ?
-
This is an image of my family taken in the early 1890’s.
Their attire will help you narrow down the time period.
-
Carol's 2nd. guess is correct. It's Edwardian.
The sleeve style (not to be confused with the 1890's Gigot) was popular from around mid decade so I would suggest 1905-10.
-
Thanks Carol, Colin and Jim, as usual greatly appreciate your help.
She was born in 1881 so this would make her mid twenties, which to me looks about right!
a-i,
Not sure if she holding anything or it could be damage, it's a bit hard to see.
Thanks again everyone!
Caz
PS Sorry for posting so big! ;D

I notice she doesn't appear to be wearing a wedding ring which might tweak the date a bit.
-
Great minds Jim, just been looking that up, except it throws a spanner in the works. She married in 1899. However, at some point between 1908 and 1911, Henry (hubby) and Annie went to India, so I wonder if this was taken out there and sent to the relative that owns the original? Doesn't explain the lack of a wedding ring though. :-\
-
How sure are you it's who you say it is ?
-
Again, great minds. I questioned it with the person that gave me the photo but she swears it's Annie or Nancy as she was known by (no idea why), as she is a direct ancestor of hers only a couple of generations back. I have a few photos of Annie and she does look like her but I have a niggling doubt.
-
I thought that she looked to be wearing thin dark gloves. Especially her left hand. They look very dark compared to her face even allowing for shadow. So you would not see a wedding ring.
A lovely photo Caz.
-
Yes you're right of course. That solves that one.
-
I'm not sure that she is wearing gloves, they would have to be really long...there appears to be veins showing on her right hand, I do see a bulge on her finger which looks like a ring.

I think she is wearing gloves and a bulge that is possibly aring is showing on left hand.
The marks that you think might be veins, Carol, are decorative stitching that you find on may gloves. I've got a few pairs with that kind of stitching.
Gadget (a bit late !)

I thought the same as Hazelbea that she is wearing gloves, mainly because of the tone of her hands and arms (dark grey), but then as Carol points out, you can see veins and a bulge on her finger. The only thing I can think of is that she is wearing evening gloves which is rather strange in itself. ???
-
Better late than never! :). I know what you mean Gadget, like pin tucks on the top of the glove, and yes, I think you are right.
-
I thought that her attire was quite dressy to be wearing 3/4 sleeves without gloves.
The positioning of her left hand (fingers) looks odd. I wondered if she was holding something sparkly with a ray of light catching it ? Or maybe just a trick of the light :-\
-
My reasoning on the gloves issue was that you usually see wrinkles around the wrist and between the fingers, but they could be very close fitting. I can see an impression where a ring would be.

When Annie and Henry were in India, they hobnobbed with the Raj and lived quite the high life, so I guess she could have been dressed for a special occasion. They returned to the UK when the war broke out and Henry enlisted. After the war, Henry went to China to supervise work on the railways there. Eventually Annie and two of her children joined him in China. He was killed in an accident 6 months after their arrival. :(
Thanks so much Carol, a-l, Colin, Jim, Hazelbea and Gadget for your input, much appreciated.

Oh how sad.
-
Very sad. There is an error in the article, they had four children but only the two youngest went to China. The two eldest daughters stayed in the UK, and never got to see their dad for a number of years before he was sadly killed. :(

It is very sad :-\ Just had a play, but not a lot, although you will probably get round to doing it yourself ;D
