Hi there,
My name is Evelyn Stuart. Charles Stuart (born in 1883) and who died in 1943 is my Great-Grandfather. I'm only just starting on this journey, and trying to find the puzzle pieces regarding his time before he arrived in New Zealand. My Grandad was one of six siblings. My great-grandmother, Elizabeth, died 7 years before I was born. However, my Dad remembers her well. Our family is based in Christchurch. There is also a possibility that we have family links to the West Coast of New Zealand. I have an old photo of a police officer who is deemed to be part of this West Coast family (even though family surnames are spelt differently). My grandad was looking into this just before he died.
I haven't managed to gather my thoughts around this yet - I have found out more information in the last 24 hours, than I have known for a lifetime! However, I would really love to see what further information I can find out from others researching the same family. Thank you.

Hi Evelyn, and welcome to RootsChat :)
I'm sure we'll be able to help you. Are you able to provide any more information about the family, i.e. where Charles STUART was born, his parents and siblings names if you have them, the name of the police officer?
By the way, you have posted this topic in New Zealand Completed Requests. I'll move it across to the main NZ Board where more people will see it.

Hello Evelyn,
In case you don't have the death notice for Charles Stuart:........

If you don't have the marriage registration details, it could be worthwhile sending for a printout. This document is cheaper and may contain more information than a certificate. And it can be e-mailed.
If you are in luck, the document may show a little more than just "Ireland" for great-grandad's place of birth.
1907/7590 Elizabeth McDonald Charles Stuart

His place of birth should also be shown on printouts for the birth of his children.

Thank you all for your quick responses. I do actually know some of the details for Charles Stuart, and have visited his grave in Christchurch, but just don't really know much about his siblings or his parents. He arrived in New Zealand in 1903 and met my great-grandmother, Elizabeth. He fought in WWI, and he died at age 60 in 1943. I saw older information posted by another member on this site (who was a great niece/nephew of him), and am hoping they might see this post. Up until today, I didn't realise he had any siblings!! He didn't appear to have maintained any contact with his family. If anyone has any further insight into my family - or might possibly be related - I would love to hear from you! Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

p.s. Thank you "minniehaha" and "Janette" for the link to the Death notice, and the WWI file for Charles. I hadn't seen either of those yet! They are amazing. I never would have guessed, at starting this journey, how emotional I would be at seeing items like those for the first time! Truly grateful.

Is the date of his birth on the WW1 file incorrect?
Age 60 in 1953 = b 1883
here

This site is free. Just have to register and solve a captcha.
Tree on Ancestry lists siblings etc. you can make contact with owner of that tree.
It looks a good tree, although you should always get your own evidence as it is easy to make mistakes.

Don't know whether you have this info.
Charles Stuart arrived in Wellington on the Paparoa from London, 28 Dec 1903.
His occupation is farmer.

That should be 'Age 60 in 1943 = b 1883'
That record is from 1940 (WW2) making out he was aged 49+ instead of his actual age of 56+. The correct year of 1883 is on documents further on.
I have an old photo of a police officer
Charles' father William was a Head Constable so you may like to post the photo here to have it identified and dated.

Is this the "older post" you were referring to. If so it's a reference to other research already done on the subject.

Charles Stuart's brother, George, b 1881, may have also emigrated to New Zealand in 1909.
