I’m looking for further information on the Young family of Braintree. Two of the sons Had unusual names (my gggrandfather) Solomon and his brother Inkerman.
I’ve traced back to their grandfather William Young of Felstead. 1800’s. I want to go further: and I’m wondering if it’s a possibility that there was an anglicised surname change at some point.
They were travelling carpenters and the names being more European has left me questioning this.
I’m a bit stuck as to how to find out more, any info or advice would be great.

I wouldn't get too diverted by Inkerman. That probably comes from the Battle of Inkerman in the Crimean War. It was fought in 1854 and I see your chap was born at about the same time

There are some wills of people named Young in Felsted:
James Young, senior, of Felsted, grocer and shopkeeper, 1781
Joseph Young, of Felsted, maltster, 1815
Joseph Young of Felsted, carpenter, 1836

Thankyou.
It looks like the will of Joseph Young could be one I’m looking for. The same occupation of carpenter and death year.
Looks like I will need to subscribe to the archive in order to read the file.

On the parish registers, William young baptised in felsted, 15/2/1819 to William and Charlotte.
William young of felsted married Charlotte ardley in great tey 23/10/1817.
Not sure about this but ... There’s a Charlotte ardley baptised cressing 22/7/1792. Her parents were Benjamin and Sarah. If this is her, she is one of twelve children.
However, Benjamin ardley dies great tey in 1816, so maybe they move that way.

Just looking up William b1796 (William b1819’s father). He was a maltster, so the 1815 will looks a possibility.

It would be worth you getting a sub to SEAX as this definitely looks like the right will. Children ... John, William, Sarah, hannah, Elizabeth all the right names. William is a malster in it. The. You can download a copy and see it for yourself.

Jospeh young married hannah bright nov 1780 felsted. She seems to switch between calling herself Johanna and the shortened version hannah. First child Johanna baptised March 1781.

There are four Joseph Youngs born in Felsted before this:
1721 Joseph Young son of John and Sarah
1733 Joseph Young son of James and Philippa
1765 Joseph Young son of David and Judith
1772 Joseph Young son of John and Mary
The only one that seems possible is 1733 Joseph Young son of James and Philippa, though he'd be 47 when he got married and 60 when William was born. Theoretically possibly but unlikely? But there's the will of James Young in 1781 that might clear that up.

There’s also one at little waltham, 1761. (Although I think it’s this Joseph who dies in 1766, as Joseph and Mary go on to have more children). Not so very far away. Parents Joseph and Mary. I discounted the felsted 1765 one as he’s only have been sixteen when he married. Unlikely to have been able to support a family!
Had another look at the will of James. He only mentions James and elisabeth as his children. No Joseph.

There’s a Joseph young baptised in stisted (other side of Braintree) in 1756 to John and Mary. There’s also a Solomon young baptising children there. It’s the first time I’ve seen a Solomon young. Could be a possibility?

I believe your William Young married Charlotte Ardley, my 5-great aunt in Great Tey 1817. Witnesses to this marriage were Elizabeth Young, Moses Ardley, Susannah Ardley. Moses was Charlotte's brother, William is of Felsted and and Charlotte is of Great Tey.
I've extensively researched the ancestry of Charlotte's parents Benjamin Ardley 1754-1816 and Sarah Harrington 1756- 1847 using the wills at Essex Record Office. If you're interested in these lines send me a private message.

William Young is the son of Joseph and Joanna/Hannah. The 1815 will belongs to this Joseph Young. His age at death gives an approximate birth year of 1748. I have been unable to find a baptism for Joseph. Joseph and Joanna are my 4 x g.grandparents.
SedgwickLadd, regarding the name Ardley, I am looking for a baptism of an Elizabeth Ardley c1705 who married in Stisted in 1732, an Edmund Jarmin of Glemsford Suffolk. Have you come across her, at all?
