Post by: Lombard on Wednesday 08 April 20 09:12 BST (UK)
Mary married thomas toft in march 1853 age 19 in sunderland.
Where was she born? John Clark was her father!
Anyone with a connection to Mary to help with my dilemma ?

Hi - can you tell us what other information you have about the Toft family?

Do you have them in Censuses?  Where/when was husband Thomas Toft born?

If you tell us what you know, it saves people finding things you have already.

What information does it give about her father John on her marriage certificate? That might help to identify the correct parents for her.

TOFT, DANIEL       CLARK
GRO Reference: 1853  S Quarter in SUNDERLAND  Volume 10A  Page 287

First child?

TOFT, ELIZABETH  ELDER     CLARK
GRO Reference: 1856  D Quarter in SUNDERLAND  Volume 10A  Page 361

Another?

And then looking for Elizabeth Elder Toft in the Census, here's the 1861 for mother Mary.

Ancestry says she's 20, but the image looks like 25 (better, given the ages of the children)

Mary Toft
Age:   20 [25]
birth year:   1841 [1836]
Wife
Female
Born:   Newcastle, Northumberland, England
Parish:   Bishopwearmouth
Ecclesiastical parish:   St Paul
County: Durham
England

Reg district:   Sunderland
Sub-reg district:   South Bishop Wearmouth
ED:   8

Piece:   3773
Folio:   10
Page Number:   13

Mary Toft   20
John Toft   9
Mary Jane Tott   6
Elizabeth Elder Toft   4
Thomas Toft   1

Suggests Mary Clark Toft born c 1835 in Newcastle

Could this be the family in 1871? Surname showing as Taft here but Mary recorded as Jane? Cannot see another possible census entry for them.

Birthplace showing as Sunderland. And this could be them in 1881. Thomas now a miner. Mary's pob again given as Sunderland ( Have checked groindex for mmn of children and it does appear to be Clark).

There's a marriage 11 Aug 1816, Bishopwearmouth between Daniel Toft and Mary Elder, both of this parish. Witnesses Elizabeth Anderson and Mary Haddock, which might be worth a look at.

Good call, Angelfish, especially given the first name of what looks like the first child of Thomas and Mary

Just to add to my earlier post the address in the 1871 census I quoted is Pemberton Street, Bishopwearmouth. This is the same street in the census that Igor Strav quoted for 1861. I also note that while Familysearch has transcribed the surname as Taft FindMyPast has transcribed the surname as Toft.

Many thanks one and all for taking the time to reply to my query.
The information you provided was by and large what I have in my possession.
The problem is that she had given different locations for her birthplace and Clark being a very common surname adds to the confusion.

Many thanks,

Regards,

Lombard.
