I am looking for any information on a Catin or Caton Willis. He was born in Ireland in 1795. As a young man he settled in Ramsay on the outskirts of Carleton Place, Lanark County, Ontario. He died in Ramsay in 1869. The only other thing I know of this ancestor was that in 1836 his name appeared as a contributor to the Carleton Place fund for providing and operating a curfew bell and in 1845 he was a Church Warden of St. James Church. Unfortunately I do not know if he was married or had children. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Sorry, wrong father in this marriage. As all of the Willis families seem to be related, some time could be spent working out the different family lines.

the son in law might not have remembered his wife's grandmother's first name.

This might or might not be Catin's wife. A John Willis of the same generation married a woman named Jane as well. They might have also had a daughter Martha. Maybe you can sort it out from the location. Or eliminate her, if Catin's daughter Martha had married by 1881.

I'm surer about this match for Jane than the one in 1881. Henry Young and Abraham Morphy are on this page and they were both on the same census page as Catin and Jane in 1861 as well.

This is not Catin's wife Jane, age 80 in 1891. This woman's son James was born about 1848 in Ireland.

a couple thoughts
1. Someone in that Willis clan must know what part of Ireland they came from. It might be at this site somewhere.
As per the list here:-

2. If there was a Griffin/Griffith family in the area, then Catin and Jane may have married in Canada.

Wonderful information you all have provided me with and I thank you all so much. It is so much appreciated. My Willis ancestors came from Wexford, Ireland to the Lanark County area in Canada all between 1818 and 1822. There was a George Willis born about 1778 and died February 16, 1855 in Beckwith Township. There was also a Henry, a William, a Thomas and Catin Willis. I feel that they might all be related to each other, but I have been unable to uncover any information of their parentage. In these times of isolation I will continue my research.

The William Willis you mentioned above is my 2nd GGF and he immigrated from Wexford, Ireland to Beckwith, Ontario 1819-1820. Since the other Willis's I have mentioned in previous posts all immigrated around the same time from the same place to the same place, I feel they all must be related but I keep ending up against a brick wall as to how they are related.
-
I am pretty sure that Thomas Willis b. 1778 is related as I have 3 DNA matches to him.

In these times of isolation ...
Likewise here. :)
So, I Googled "Willis family, Wexford, Ireland" and found some old posts, apparently yours based on the user names. At one time you were looking for an article by Professor Bruce Elliott entitled "Emigration from South Leinster to Eastern Upper Canada" in Kevin Whelan, ed. Wexford: History and Society (Dublin: Geography Publications, 1987)
If you haven't found the book yet, have you tried using worldcat.org to locate a copy?
This is the link if you type in "Lanark, Ontario" at the main search page.
https://www.worldcat.org/title/wexford-history-and-society/oclc/17360529
I typed in my home USA zip code, and found a number of colleges in New England that have the book. Also the New England Historic and Genealogical Society in Boston has a copy. They will do a lookup for $, if and when this virus ever goes away. (They are currently closed.)
And do you have this resource? I haven't needed C of I registers yet, so I'm not too familar with it, but it looks thorough. I understand though that, unfortunately, most of their registers perished in the 1922 Records House fire in Dublin.

Hello,
I am still researching Caton Willis. I understand that I can look up land records for him in Ramsay, Ontario on Familysearch. I am hoping that someone might be able to help me obtain the records. He settled as a young man on Concession 8, Lot 2W, Ramsay, Ontario, Canada when the township opened. Thank you in advance.
