Hello
I have recently had my DNA results from Ancestry, mostly what I expected 90% Ireland & Scotland, the places in Ireland aren’t where I expected, that’s a job for another day, working out where they came from to where they ended up. Got loads of 3rd & 4th cousins into the mix, & can see where they fit into my tree, been in touch with a few which was nice.
However the one person I’m puzzled about is a 1st – 2nd cousin we share 687 cM across 28 segments, which compared to the 3rd & 4th cousins in really high, I won’t mention any names as this person is still living, I’ve had a look on the person’s tree & been in contact with her nephew who manages it for her & neither her or the nephew have any knowledge of any one in my tree, or me with the woman’s tree.
The only information in common with my self & the woman is that both our ancestors came from a particular area in Glasgow.
As the DNA seems to indicate that myself & the woman share at the very least great grandparents I’m puzzled as to where we connect.
Could this situation perhaps be a NPE? My mother was illegitimate & perhaps a male in this womans’ line is my mother’s father.
Any ideas on how I can pursue this further would be much appreciated.
Thank you
Patricia

If nothing is immediately obvious from your existing trees look to see if there are any gaps that need to be filled. Look at shared matches to narrow down which part of your tree the person fits into.

As Craclyn says, look at the shared matches' trees. If they're from your mother's side, it would suggest that it could be a link to her father's side.
It would be worth uploading your DNA files to one of the sites that have chromosome browsers and ask if her nephew could upload her data files too.

Thank you Craclyn/Gadget
The shared matches sounds the way to go,the down side to that is so many people don't have searchable trees, or reply to messages on Ancestry.I would love to get to the bottom of this mystery.
I will get my DNA uploaded to a suitable site & see where it leads.
Thank you

I get very frustrated by the ones that, according to Ancestry, have a tree - linked or unlinked - and, when you look at it, you find 3 or less and some even all private!
My Heritage and Gedmatch seem to be the most popular for uploading to.

Hi Gadget
I know, it’s maddening isn’t it.
Can I upload to both of these sites at the same time ? Or is only one allowed

You first of all have to download your dna file from Ancestry-
Click on the settings icon (top right); scroll down to Actions; then select the download raw DNA data. I think they e-mail you with it.
It is a zip file and that's how you upload to the other sites. You'll need to register with each site but you can upload to as many as you wish.
It takes a while to get the results from them - days going on to weeks.
It would be best to get the nephew to do the same at the same time.

Thank you for that, I’ll get that organised.
Thank you for your help
