Title: Marie and Victor GILBERT
Post by: delen on Saturday 28 March 20 08:08 GMT (UK)
Looking for any info. on the following - this is all I have on them, not sure if they were siblings or husband and wife, nor any idea of where they were born.

Marie Gilbert (Goldstein) born 1905
Victor Gilbert (Goldstein) born 1901
found them on 1939 register as living at Risby Cottage Quays Road Risby.
---
There are also two others at the same address on 1939 register  ( Mary and William Byers)

They are  not on the village 1911 census.

Grateful for any help
Thanks

Hi Delen

Can you please fully describe the 1939 Entry, including all margin notations. ie:  the manner & way in which they paid are listed with two surnames?  the birth dates,? what number are they in the household ?

We can respond to your information, but we can't be seen to be 'looking it up' ourselves and relaying that back, to fill in the blanks!

 ;)

Cheers

If any of their children were born in England Marie’s maiden name will be shown against the registration entry

I can’t see any obvious English marriage on freebmd so they may have married in Austria

Thank you all for help given. The mention that Victor was a Butler make good sense now as I had always had an idea that they were both in service in  "the big house"

thank you

Mary and Viktor were my paternal grandparents and I would be interested in any more information available. My dad John (Hans) is now 91 and is really keen to learn anything more about his parents time in Risby. He attended the junior school for a time and was christened in the church. He visited some years back and has I understand, seen the record of this in the church. He has fond memories of the Byers family for whom his parents worked. Does Risby Cottage Quays Road still exist? A quick look on street view seems to show a narrow road of post war houses only..... Hoping someone can add to our back story. Thanks in advance

As you have found Quays Road looks relatively modern.  Think cottage does not mean ancient.  Have you checked full address from 1939?

Wonder if it is 'The Cottage' on that map?

If you look on the summary census sheets for 1911, Risby Cottage is between Avenue Cottages and Church Cottages, lived in by Mrs Tollemache/Sollemashe.

In 1901 census William A Tollemache age 83, retired captain, is living at Risby Cottage.  He dies in 1911, before census.  On 1901 census between Avenue and Church Cottages.  He is widowed living with niece and 2 staff.

Church Cottages is Grade II listed:

Thanks for the replies - I've passed the info to my Dad to see if he can work it out any further.
