My 4x grt grandmother Mary Knowlden,b abt 1756 married John Hopkin 18 Dec 1786 in Llysworney She died in 1839 at Michaelstone le pit. I am trying to trace any other Knowlden's to no avail. ideally I would like her birth but that seems impossible. The Hopkins lived and worked around that area John was born in Coychurch but died in MLP and some of their children were also born in MLP
children: Thomas 1787,Mary 1789(my 3xgrt grandmother) John 1791 Ann 1795 Richard 1798.
Any ideas gratefully received

Although she married in Wales - what evidence do you have that she was actually born there?
From Family Search
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NRH9-64P
The first 2 children born to the 1786 marriage were Thomas & Mary but they were also the names of John's parents so no real clues there ???

There's a potential very brief mention of Mary in a newspaper of 187), which lists unclaimed monies from somewhere (quick research suggests Bank of England)
Mary Knowldin, maid to Ann Edwards Liswenny, South Wales Jan 1782. 2 [guess this could mean £2?]

thank you for those replies the newspapers sound promising which date? I think there has been a misprint in what you have typed.
I am not sure that she was born in wales at all, only that people did not usually travel very far years ago. It is such an unusual name I am surprised there are no other records of it.
thanks again

It is an unusual surname so I suspect it may well be mis-spelt along the way.
Using the wildcard search knowld** throws up 115 entries on the English 1841 and 136 entries on the 1851 but nothing at all on the Welsh 1841/1851
It's interesting that the 1841 showed all entries in the South of England (Kent, Middlesex, Surrey etc) with the exception of 4 in Lancs & one in Yorkshire.
The 1851 was the same except for one in Devon - none in Lancs or Yorkshire

Apologies - the newspaper item was from 1870. See

It is in Welsh, but you can see Mary's entry in the last group of names
