Title: Railway Porter living in Kent
Post by: Debrakaye on Saturday 21 March 20 13:56 GMT (UK)
On the birth certificate of his son, Jesse Jupp is a Railway Porter, living at 3 Church Street, Lee, in 1853.
I am hunting for Jesse Jupp's full date of birth. Would there be a record of his commencement of work that I could find? Where can I look please?
(Jesse was born in Maresfield, Sussex, baptised  with 2 of his brothers, Census records tell me he was born around 18**) Thank you. Debra
SORRY, I have put wrong dates in, Jesse was born around 1819-1820, he was baptised 3 years later with 2 other brothers. Baptism found in Maresfield.

Something wrong there - baptised 6 years before he was born?

Sorry Groom, date fixed.
Rosie, I didn't think I could have everything on the London Post, as I'm searching different areas.

It is not normally a good idea to post about the same thing on different boards as we do tend to get carried away with our searches.  ;D   As you will see I had asked on your other post whether it was something we could help with but I was not quick enough and you had reposted.

Not a problem though.  I am not seeing Police or railway records for him, I doubt that they would give a date of birth on them though just an age at joining

Apologies, but Jesse was said to be 31 in 1851, so born around 1820, not 1829  :-\

1861 says he is 40, so again around 1820.

There is a Jesse Jupp. Baptised  20 June 1819 at East Preston, Sussex .Son of George and Naomi Jupp.
This would seem to fit better with your Jesse.

A bit of a problem, I think - marriage entry says that Jesse's father is Henry, a farmer. Shame!   :'(

Sorry everyone, was midnight here when I wrote post, so didn't notice my mistakes.
Thank you all, I was hoping to find any records that might have his date of birth.
He is definitely the son of Henry Jupp and Mary nee Fitness in Maresfield, Sussex.
He was Baptised a few years after he was born.
He had on first son's birth certificate that he was a Policeman, but I don't know if that is correct either.
Regards

I can't help with a date of birth, however there are numerous newspaper articles which mention Jesse JUPP. He was witness to two serious railway accidents  - one in 1857 (he was porter employed at Blackheath station) and the other in 1864.

Also a death notice published in the Morning Post, Thursday,  July 8, 1897  I assume this is the correct Jesse - based on electoral register?

Unfortunately the copy I can see is very badly photographed:

"On the [3 ?] rd inst., at The Island, Limehouse, Jesse  Jupp, late [ .....] aged seventy eight."

Wow! Thank you Mandy.
Where can I find the newspaper articles please?
Jesse died 3rd July 1897 The Island, Lead Mills, Island Row, but I have not found where he was buried. I have his death certificate.

I access British Library Newspapers online (free) through my Australian National Library card. As an Australian resident you can apply for a card here:
https://www.nla.gov.au/getalibrarycard/

Alternatively there are a number of pay sites where you can also access newspapers - Ancestry/findmypast/British Newspaper Archive etc

I can't attach images on this board, but if you'd like I could email you some of the articles. Send me a pm.  :)
