Title: Pembrokeshire Police 1860s-1880s
Post by: MJBatten on Friday 20 March 20 07:46 GMT (UK)
My ggg grandfather, William Henry Davies born 1844 in Tenby (went by Henry) was a policeman between 1860 and 1880 in Tenby, Haverfordwest, St Isells, Little Haven and Castledyrran areas. I have tried the archives in Haverfordwest and they don’t hold any police records. I wondered if there was an records pertaining to Pembrokeshire police during these years and if so, where I might find them? That’s if they even kept records for personnel back then.

Many thanks,

MJ

Generally speaking police records have only survived in a piecemeal fashion. The paper pulping demands of two world wars took their toll, and Police officers have been reluctant to hand over their records for preservation by other agencies.
"My Ancestor was a Policeman" by Anthony Shearman, has Gazetteer and Directory of existing records, but there is no entry for Pembrokeshire.
There is also the Police History Society http://www.policehistorysociety.co.uk/index.html

Another tthing to try is looking in the National Library of Wales newspapers  - a free resource. I've found stories there for a Pembrokeshire policeman ancestor in the 1860s.
