Title: Thomas Carter
Post by: Jackie45 on Monday 16 March 20 23:09 GMT (UK)
Hi Everyone
Can anyone help me please?

I have a Thomas Carter b1858 who married Jane Ellen Hollis 19.11.1892 in Abram, Wigan. He was 34. Bachelor. He was a labourer. She was 26.; so born around 1866?  Spinster. They were living in Bamfurlong at time of marriage.

I have their wedding certificate and it states his father is Thomas Carter deceased. He was a Brakeman? No father listed for Jane.

I just cannot find the father who is deceased at the time of their 1892 marriage.

Can anyone find him please?

Some years ago I was looking at a Carter Hancock Ball line as I thought he was an illegitimate child of Martha Carter who was born 1830 in Backford. I've started to search again and now this certificate has thrown a spanner in the works!

Apologies for the essay.....just wanted to give as much info as possible.

Thank you in advance.

No info given re his birthplace.  If he is the 1901 entry b Whitley Cheshire - you need to ask the moderator to move your post to the Cheshire board

Thanks just seen them.

So the Carter Hancock trail was correct.

I've never found Martha, his mother b1830 married.

So it's a mystery his father is listed as Thomas.

I need to get his birth certificate I think

Thomas

Martha was unmarried in 1851 & 1861 as was Joseph.  I think the 1871 entry showing them as married is an error

Thank you.

I had gone down this line but when I got his marriage certificate it threw me.

Wonder why he put Thomas as his father?

Jane's is left blank?!

Mysteries

Thank you for helping

Not unusual for an illegitimate child to make up a fathers name when they married so as to appear "respectable"

However - as it appears Jane was also illegitimate you have to wonder at his reasoning?  The only other explanation was that his biological father was called Thomas but not surname Carter.

Martha Ball was previously married

In 1841 Martha aged 10 & brother Joseph 14 are shown as Ball

Yes I assumed its because of the 'shame' factor.

Think I had better leave it there as I could be searching for years!

Thanks for the Ball marriage also.
