Title: Where would my ancestor have got his wounds?
Post by: JoolsAnn123 on Friday 13 March 20 08:54 GMT (UK)
Edward Price was discharged from the 23rd Foot Regiment and admitted as an outpatient to the Kilmainham Hospital in 1822.  Records say he was discharged wounded.
Where would he be likely to have got wounded?

Thanks in advance

It looks like the Battle of Albuera

He seems to have a severe gun shot wound through something but I cannot think of anything that fits and also a slight wound to his arm.

Thorax does fit and would explain why he was discharged wounded.

Yes, Albuera 1811, Peninsular war. A very bloody battle conducted by General William Carr Beresford. Beresford was also trainer and commander of the Portuguese Army, and very good they were too. Infantry wore brown jackets.

Must be Thorax.  Why wasn't he discharged until 1822?

It does seem odd in view of the gun shot wound being described as severe, Hmm.

Maybe in the Royal Hospital, Chelsea? check the National Archives.

Reading the rest of the discharge record - he had been incapable of using his left arm for ...... 6 months.

So it looks likely that, in spite of his injuries, he was able to continue in active service until 1822.

Thanks for your answers.

Does anyone know how I can find out where a battalion was stationed?

Edward Price went on to join the Third Royal Regiment of Veterans. He enlisted in Ireland in May 1823 and was discharged in Jersey in 1825.

I'm trying to find out when he would have arrived in Jersey as it will help me pin down his daughter's date of birth.

Thanks x

This site has links to regiments in Jersey (but I don't think it helps)   :(

Between 22 and 29 April 1824 to Jersey to replace the 72nd Foot - culled from newspaper reports.
