Hello,
i have been trying to solve a brick wall. I have got a DNA match that may be helpful as they seem to be an illegitimate descendant of my great-grandfather. Great-grandfather's maternal grandfather is a mystery 'George Wilson'. His daughter, my great-great grandmother was born in the countryside of Victoria, Australia, in the mid 1850s. There is no birth record, and no marriage record of her parents. Her mother's history is known to our family, but not her father's.
Using mutual matches between the DNA match and my aunt, I eliminated those from my great-grandfather's paternal side and from his mother's maternal side. The few remaining matches, ergo, must be from his mother's paternal side. They seem to lead to a Hogan family who emigrated to the US from Sweden.
John Hogan seems to have been born in December 1854 in Varberg, Hallands, Sweden. His wife was Josefina Augusta Stevenson, October 1858, Hallands. If my great-great-great grandfather is from this family, it would be from at least 2 or 3 generations further back, so I am trying to take these lines further back and then try and go forwards in time to see if anyone ended up in Australia.
I am wondering how can I access Swedish Church records for Varberg, or if anyone is able to help in any other way.
Of course my ancestor might also be descended from the family that the Hogans' son Harry married into as well, which is James J Reilly 1860 Dublin, who married Jane Frances Summers, of Lanarkshire Scotland, born 1868.
Any help that anyone can offer will be gratefully accepted!

Hi
Do you know when this John Hogan emigrated to USA?
Ian
-
Apparently 1880, to New York, from Liverpool on The City of Paris.
-
Which names did they go under on the passenger list?
Ian
-
Sorry, but I am not sure - I am trying to find what I can via ancestry. I will see if I can find the shipping list there.
-
Is this the family in Pennsylvania 1900:

Ian
-
Yes.
-
Are you sure of their place and dates of birth are correct?
Ian
-
Going by the naturalisation record, it should be correct - but I suppose people could have been liberal with the truth. Have just found a death cert for John that says his father's name was Carl.
-
Were they married in Sweden?
-
One of the censuses says married in 1880, but I don't know if that was in Sweden.
-
Does it say Varberg on the naturalization record?
-
Yes, it has Warberg, Halland written.
-
even for Josephina?
-
no date of birth on the nat record?
-
There is no birth place for Josephina. His DOB is given as 5 December 1854.
-
I'll see what I can do but I would like the passenger list info.
Ian
-
Unfortunately I wasn't able to find anything that fitted with the information on the naturalisation record. If you are able to find anything in Swedish records, that would indeed be helpful - or even something that points me in the right direction.
-
I'll get back to you.

Thanks!

Hi
He wasn't an easy man to follow. His name is Johan Bernhard Johansson or Olsson.
I have found him and his family. According to his birth record he was born 3 Dec 1854 and christened 5 Dec but his examination (census) records his birth is recorded as 5 Dec 1854.
This is his last record in Sweden - family 19-21. He is recorded as being in USA on the right hand side:

Thank you for that - so Hogan isn't the real last name at all then.
-
Hmmmm........ I looked further into this family and found that this Johan apparently died in USA in 1881 on 29 Oct.
On the right hand side it says "dead in USA according to letter from his sister and relatives":
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01p5u/ - nr 9.
I'm not too sure what to say about this. He perhaps isn't the right man.

I don't know if this will help but this page records that Johan's sister Olivia Beata - nr 13 and 14 and daughter as being in USA in 1880 and being married to a Eckerard Isacksson from Varberg being married 21 Aug 1881 and died 8 Jun 1882....... information about a child being born in Rochester, New York.

It is very difficult to decipher all the text. I hope I got the gist of it all. You may want to check this info on FamilySearch if searchable.

....... more info from the next book. You can zoom in with the + button.
Olivia came back to Sweden with her daughter Emma. Emma was born in Rochester. Olivia's husband Edward Jackson had died in 1882:

Thank you for all your help with this.

Hi
I didn't give up.
I have now definately found John and Josephine in Sweden in Morup Parish. Unlucky in that both Johans had the same birth date and went to USA around the same time.
This is John and family as a widow in 1920 Census. It shows he was from Morup Sweden. A lucky break:

They were married in Morup Parish in 1880:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01p60/ - nr 4.
Johan Severin Hagman and family in 1880. His father is Carl August Hagman:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01p61/ - note to right says America 1880.
Josephine Augusta Salomonsdotter and family in 1880:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01p62/ - note to right says married to J S Hagman. America 1880.

and their moving out record - nr 61 and 62:

Thank you so much for that!

The Hagman family in the next book shows that 4 of John's siblings also went to USA:
