Hi Decota,
Just a possibility ....
1896/6278 Wilson Jane 53Y
1880/1405 Wilson John William 51Y
Burial location says Invercargill, but this depends if it is your couple. Major libraries will have the cemetery fiche if you want to have a look.

Hi KHP and Wivenhoe
Yes the names are correct I have found in paperspast the death for John Wilson (not John William)
5th April 1880 in Gaol, Invercargill, there is also a copy of a commission of enquiry into Death of Prisoner Wilson...but I cannot
identify him as no mention of a wife, but your death date ties in with this.
Will also check out the tree on ancestry... thank you
Hello Wivenhoe
Yes this is our family I have these and we are related to Eleanor Wilson,
but don't have the Certificates for Births etc.
Really would like to go back and find out more about John William Wilson and Jane Shipton
Thank you both for working on this for me

You do not know if the death, 1880, is your John WILSON?
The marriage record, 1856, will not have details of their parents. It will record names of witnesses.......name of a church?........show if they both sign their names.........
A printout of this record will be useful to your research.
Where do you see Jane's name as SHIPTON?
-
Who and when did Eleanor marry?
-
Hello again
Yes the marriage original Certificate is the only one I have and you are right no names of parents.
This is where I have her name as Shipston. she signed, he put a cross.
No I have no definite information that the death of 1880 is our John William Wilson.
Guess I need to search the Cemetery file in Library to see if they are in the same plot?
Eleanor (Eliza) Wilson Married John Thomas Bowen, Invercargill New Zealand ?
b. 1862 Timaru (maybe incorrect) no Cert.
d. 18/09/1940 Christchurch in her 79th year. (have death notice from paper)

Hello Janette
Thank you for searching for the cemetery records.
Have been trying to tie in the initials trying to find George Wilson, d. 19 May 1947
but he doesn't fit in to the family. so far.... But the John William Wilson grave is good as When... I
am able to identify him as Janes Shipton's husband. will know where he is .....
maybe they are not in Invercargill somewhere else in the South Island of New Zealand???
thank you Kiwihalfpint for working on this too

I should have added that the 1926 death of the Jane Wilson would have been 13 when your couple married in 1856.

witnesses on Certificate for marriage of John W Wilson and jane Shipston both aged 22 yrs,
marriage 2o February 1856 Lyttelton.
In the presence of Thomas Ervin??
and Jane Riddle.
I have a certified copy of entry of marriage for John Bowen and Eliza Wilson
3 july 1882 at Rev. J.G. Paterson's Invercargill
Eliza's parents John Wilson and Jane Wilson named Maiden name of mother Shipton
Maybe the Eleanor is wrong I remember searching few years back and somehow have
misread the year 20 years difference. as now you point in out Eleanor and Eliza are from different families. Just thought at the time she used two names.....
Our old photos of Eliza Bowen (nee) Wilson are all named Eliza. Thank you for pointing this out to me
minniehaha Yes this could be her death. Is this in the Invercargill cemetery ??

This one is at Kaiapoi Public Cemetery, not a good picture, I can just make out the figure "8", the word Jane and daughter Isabella Smith. Probably another Jane Wilson.

Eliza spent her last years in Christchurch. Article in Paperspast of how she attended Council meetings

Hi Decota, this too is my family, unfortunately they have been a nightmare to research. I descend from Louisa Wilson whose married name is Dryden. My tree on ancestry.com.au is Dryden, Johnstone, Kissell and Thomson Family Tree.
