Title: Need help dating this photo Powis family from Stoke on Trent
Post by: Westfield on Sunday 08 March 20 20:53 GMT (UK)
This is the Powis family from Stoke on Trent. I know some of the people on here, but a date would help me sort out the others. The man in the back row, in uniform looks like he was added later. Is that a police uniform? They were not a wealthy family, so I reckon it must be a big event they are celebrating? Any help narrowing down a year and info on the uniform would be much appreciated.

I would say this is an 1880s image and the man at the back does seem to be added into the group.

I agree, he does not seem to have quite the same tones as the rest of the group, and there is no evidence of him between the arms of the young women he is "standing behind".
The date suggested, some time in the 1880s, seems right to me, too.... is there any suitable death for him near that time? The only other times I've seen people "pasted in" is when a deceased relative has been included in a family group by that means. That might assist you to fix a close date.

Not as early as 1880's I'm afraid. These outfits didn't exist at that time.
This is late 1890's-early 1900's & more likely the latter of those dates.

I have a family group photo with the females wearing similar clothing. It's dated as 1904.

What an amazing family group to have a picture of. And they took the trouble to take the dog to the studio, he was obviously worn out by all the posing  ;)

I have a wedding photo dated 1903 and one of the guests is wearing an almost identical dress to the lady seated behind the dog

Many thanks to all of you for your replies. It confirms my thoughts that it is a photo from the turn of the last century. They were not a wealthy family and are probably wearing their 'Sunday best' for the photo, so I would not expect the fashions to be up to date.
There was a policeman in the family, but he was brother in law to the mother (lady seated in the middle) In 1911 he is retired and living next door to the family.
I was wondering if it might be a 'Diamond Jubilee' (1897), or a 'turn of the century' photo? Did they do things like that in those days? Perhaps the policeman was on duty that day?
BTW we have a very nice watercolour portrait of a pup of that dog. He was a family favourite. :)
