What may he of done to get into the newspapers?
In 1904/5 he was living at 14, Rembrandt Terrace. In 1911 still in Lewisham with his wfe Hester and 4 children. He married Hester in 1909, he may of been married before in 1885 to Sarah Caroline Cuthbert who died in 1906, Lewisham.

You can do a free search of the British newspaper archives to see if you can get any likely leads.

I think you can read 3 articles in detail before you have to pay.

https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/

Newspaper articles (if any exist) may just refer to him as Mr J Sumner, or Mr Sumner, or J Sumner, and so more background information (which you should have) makes him easier to spot.  Also his name may be transcribed incorrectly.

There are lots of hits for James Sumner, variety performer.

Is this his death?
Deaths December quarter 1926
James T Sumner age 72 at Elham  (born about 1854)

Are you hoping for an obituary?

Thank you so very much for all this information. The information  tells me that my Great Great Grandfather James Tucker Sumner was living with his son James and wife near the time of his Death and is actually buried in Hanwell and not Lewisham, This is such a revelation.  :-)

Hi Verdia, I just stumbled across this by accident.  It is a couple of years old so hopefully you will see my response.

James is my great grandfather via his second wife (Hester).  Their son (Raymond) is my grandfather.

After James passed away the children were sent to an orphanage, and Ray was shipped off the Canada.  He returned to the UK during the war, got married, started a family and eventually migrated to Australia.
