Title: Llanfair Talhaiarn - The Davies Family
Post by: JJS on Sunday 21 August 05 13:30 BST (UK)
I'm trying to find the marriage details of my great-great grandparents - can anyone help?

They were Robert Davies (born: 1864 in Llanfair Talhaiarn, son of William and Ann Davies) and Margaret Roberts (born: 1870 in Denbigh) - obviously, these are very common names so it could prove tricky!  Their eldest son Robert William Davies was born on 21/05/1892 in Llanfair Talhaiarn, so I presume that the wedding would have been just before that.

Also, I'm trying to find out about what happened to their son, Robert William - my grandmother does not remember this uncle of hers ever being mentioned, so perhaps he died young.

Family rumour has it that my 3 x great grandfather, William Davies (born: 1839 in Llanfair Talhaiarn, son of Robert and Jane Davies) was a bard (bardic name apparently - Gwilym Elwy) - does anyone know where I can try and find out more about this?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,

JJS

You are right about the name - I am struggling with a William Davies father of Ann in the Wrexham area.
You have however got loads of information inc parents of Robert and the date of birth of the eldest son.
I would have thought your best bet would be to ask the local registrar for the certificate. I am not sure whether Denbigh or Llanfait Talhairn come under Denbighshire north or south and attach both details. I know from experience that they prefer a letter with a cheque which will not be cashed if they cannot help. They will usually look 2 years either side of the likely date. I assume you have tried the Free BMD search.
Robert William was alive in 1901. Again it may be worth looking on Free BMD as otherwise you will have difficulty with the local registrar as you cannot suggest any date of death. You could also look on www.1837online.com but that may again be difficult. Have you thought of finding the grave of your gggp where he might also be buried.
I cannot help with the bard question but suggest a web search or possibly putting the question on the Cymraeg board of Rootschat even in English.

If he was a bard, he will most likely have been a member of "Gorsedd y beirdd".
Here is the link explaining what its about:

It might be worth your while contacting the Eisteddfod with your query - they may be able to help.

Hello

It looks as though we share some ancestry.  William Davies and Ann were my Great Great Great Grand Parents.  Their son, William, born in 1862 was killed in a mining accident in 1908 at Bettisfield Colliery.  I have some history of the Davies family I can send over to you if you are interested.

I am located in Nottingham and relate to the Davies family through my paternal Grandmother who was Lillian Davies.

Best regards

Kevin Jones

Robert Davies (Gwilym Elwy) is my great Grandfather. My Grandmother (fathers side) was another Jane Davies. I know he was married twice, grave stone is probably correct. Family story tells that he won an eisteddfod with a poem which was a eulogy to his late wife. We were sent a copy of this by my father's cousin who lived in Herefordshire. It was written in Welsh untainted by the 20th century. Beautiful and complex, it was handed to a family friend to be translated. She sadly and suddenly died the following day - nobody had the heart to ask for it back! Don't know if the eisteddfod was a local one or national. A request to a friend at Colwyn Bay Library failed to find any information on him. The house he lived at in Llanfair is now called Ty Bardd (Poet's House).

If you go to the NLW site,www.llgc.org.uk,there is a section "Welsh Newspapers Online".If you use the search term "Gwilym Elwy",among the returns is a coy of an Englynion.
