Hi all
I am back trying to translate an old baptismal record. I have got as far as
"Thomas Rutherford sone to the docoast John Rutherford of Edgerstoun had a man child baptised John, John Taitt & Thos Armstrong my servitors witnesses.
Anyone read it differently? The italicised bits are the ones I am unsure of. If I have it right, what is a "docoast". Google did not help!
Thanks
Barbara

Could 'docoast' be 'deceast' meaning dead?
I agree with servitors.

Possibly thanks Emeltom - I have had no indication previously of his father's name or status, but there are lots of Johns in the family. ;D

The sd day
Thomas Rutherfurd sone to the deceast John Ru=
therfurd of Edgerstoun had a manchild Baptized John
John Taitt & Tho: Armstrang my servitors witnesses
The said day means the same day as the previous entry. The minister's servants witnessed this baptism, but I can see that one witness to the previous baptism was Hector Rutherfurd and the other (which is cut off) could be Thomas Rutherford.
If you look up the online catalogue of the National Records of Scotland, you will find about thirty references to the Rutherfords of Edgerston. There are papers in the National Library going back to the 14th century.

Thanks GR2. I have gleaned a lot of information on the Rutherfords, however some of it seems to be contradictory! Not unusual with this hobby. My ancestor was Isabel Rutherford married to Robert Alder of Prendrick 28 July 1713. It is her place in the Rutherford family I am trying to find enough proof to be happy with. She was baptised 8 March 1687 in Jedburgh, father Thomas. But my feeling is that this was not the Thomas who is also father of John in the current baptismal record of 1/2/1687. I may never know. But it is fun looking! May need another trip to Scotland.

If her husband was Robert Alder OF Pendrick, it means he owned Pendrick, or a part of it. In that case there may well be useful information in the Register of Sasines, especially if any provision was made for her at the time of her marriage.
