I have hit a brick wall with William Jones who is my 3rd great grandfather. I found his burial in OPC Lancashire. The family are linked to Sankey Chapel, now called St Mary's in Great Sankey, Lancashire. I believe he had three sons, William born 1822, Henry born 1823 and John (my 2nd great grandfather) born 1826. I also think he married Ellen Plumpton on 14 August 1820 in Daresbury. However, what I really want to know is where he came from, where and when he was born, who his parents are and if he has any brothers and sisters. Can anyone help me please? Thanks so much in advance :)

Hiya Pixilot and a warm welcome to Rootschat
Baptism: 11 Jun 1826 Sankey Chapel, Great Sankey, Lancashire, England
John Jones - Son of William Jones & Ellen
Abode: Penketh
Occupation: Flatman
firstly - what year did William die please ?
have you found William and Ellen on any census returns ?
as a Flatman - flat bottomed boat owner - we presume he worked the Sankey Canal - which went from St Helens to the River Mersey in Sankey ...so presumably William was born somewhere between these 2 destinations - Penketh is right next to Sankey - about 10 miles from where I live .
secondly - do you know where Ellen Plumpton was from ?
if they married in Daresbury - that is the other side of the River Mersey close to Runcorn - so - maybe Ellen and William were from Cheshire - and not Lancashire ?

Hello Garstonite - thanks for replying to my message.
I've assumed William died in 1836 because of his burial date of 18 September 1836. Probably died a couple of days earlier? I can't find out what he died from but others at the time had typhus or maybe he drowned?
I haven't found William and Ellen on any census returns.
I know/assume he lived in Sankey/Penketh from 1822 when his first son William was born, through to his third son John in 1826.
Ellen was from Sankey: Baptised 22 September 1799 (OPC Lancs) her parents are Peter Plumpton (Plumton) and Rachel Hill. I found that Peter and Rachel had a daughter Alice Hill when Peter was just 13!
Ellen and William may have married in Daresbury because Sankey Chapel was not doing marriages at the time? Or maybe trying to keep her family history quiet?
I've looked at places like Walton, Grappenhall, Liverpool but can't be sure of anyone. Presumably before he became a flatman he was in agriculture??
I'm also puzzled because he only had 3 boys (that I've found) which is odd for those times - and he had 10 years after John and before he died so why no more children? His wife Ellen subsequently married a Joseph Ashton from Warrington.
Sorry for all the information! This bit of the family is complex and I haven't unravelled them yet. Some illegitimacy in the Plumpton family....Thanks for any help Garstonite :)

Hello
The marriage at Daresbury gives both of the couples from Daresbury. But of course that just means they were living there at the time.
His burial at Sankey says he was born 1799.
So two possibles
William Jones at Daresbury 29.11.1801 s of William and Mary of Lower Walton labourer
William Jones s of William and Alice at Grappenhall born 30.3.1798 and bapt 4.5.1798 of High Leigh weaver
William and Mary Jones at Daresbury (possibly married at Grappenhall 13.9.1790 William Jones and Mary Watson).
children -Betty 11.11.1792 ,Mary 8.12.1793,Nanvy 17.11.1796,Peter 17.9.1797
William Jones Grappenhall married Alice Lawson at Warrington 2.12.1784 children-
Thomas 9.1.1785 ,Mary 26.11.1786,Betty 25.1.1789 of High Leigh weaver,Martha 27.3.1791,Sarah 29.11.1793,John 1.5.1796.
I want to go for Daresbury but what do you think ?

Thanks for replying Ciderdrinker.
I recognised your suggestions and checked my notebook. I have found both of these William Jones previously and wasn't sure about either...
Daresbury William - the birth date bothers me and the names Betty, Nancy and Peter don't feature in this branch of the tree - and that bothers me too because of naming conventions
Grappenhall William - again the birth date bothers me (although I know they didn't always know their date of birth or changed it for various reasons) and names like Betty and Sarah are not repeated generationally.
I found a William Jones b. 1799 in Wigan - with father John Jones and mother Sarah Leather - but maybe Wigan is the wrong area?
And I found a William Jones b 26 September 1798 in Liverpool, baptised 10 April 1799 whose father was a mariner (parents John Jones and Margaret Williams)
Do you think it more likely to be the Daresbury William? Is there any way I can find more proof? Maybe by researching this Daresbury William's siblings and their marriages?
Thanks so much for your interest and help. You've given me food for thought!

Daresbury - Grapenhall about 5 miles - but Lower Walton to Daresbury is about 5 miles - Walton is a beautiful part and mostly money people -

well I got that wrong Walton to Daresbury is 2.7 miles - so Ciderdrinkers suggestion of
William Jones at Daresbury 29.11.1801 s of William and Mary of Lower Walton labourer
looks good to me :)
