Hi. Can anybody help?
On the 1861 Census. I have the following living at Gould Street Manchester. John Daley Born 1845. Michael Daley born 1848 and Timothy Daley born 1854.
I cannot find them on the 1871 Census.
On the 1881 census they are now livng at 47 Garnett Street Cheetham, Manchester.
but their names have changed as follows. Timothy is now Daly (probably a typo error) Michael has become Derrigan and John has now become Dougan. I can find no second and third marriage for their mother. Should I take it that she has remarried twice between 1861 and 1881. Or could it be that her husband has passed away and she has moved in with someone else?

I was just going to post and recalled an earlier thread -here it is

That looks possible Ladyhawk.
I wonder what the father’s occupation was and who were the witnesses at the marriage?
The one I mentioned earlier is possibly at Back Style Street in 1851 2230/ 447/49
Ann Dugan with sons Michael 4yrs and John 8 yrs.
This would make Michael's age wrong though in later records.
Ann marries Michael Daly in 1851.
Did you consider this and look for the marriage?

Michael Daly married Ann Dugan 1851 Manchester, Register Office or Registrar attended.

Many thanks for the information. This could be the family. On my Gt. Grandad's death certificate his shows his father as being Michael Dougan, but I cannot find a death notice for him...it would have to be before 1851 if his wife remarried in 1851. You have given me something to go on, so not quite back to the drawing board again.. Where did you get the information about marriages taking place in register offices? Christine.

The above site gives the information re venue. It is more likely that the marriage took place in a Catholic Church where a registrar would attend.

The information given re censuses show Ann as Dugan in 1851. If that is the right Michael he may have mixed the name of his stepfather, Michael, with his birth surname of Dugan.
The marriage certificate would hopefully give you Ann’s maiden name.
This site- Catholic indexes (not complete) shows Timothy Daly baptised St Chad’s 1854. It also has Michael Daly as father of Timothy. You have to do separate searches.

If you are local to Manchester, you might find that marriage, if it was at St Chad’s in the records at Manchester Archives. It might be easier though to just send off for the certificate. :)

Thanks for all the information. I :) will shortly be sending off for some certificates. I live in Warwickshire so don't get to Manchester too often. Kind regards.
