Title: William GORMAN, Burdett Road, Poplar
Post by: helenmcasmith on Saturday 15 February 20 22:14 GMT (UK)
The last known whereabouts of William GORMAN is on his mother's admission record to the asylum.  He is listed as her friend (son) of 44 Hine St, Burdett Rd, Poplar.  It was previously thought that William (born 1857, illegitimately as William James DUKE) had emigrated, but his mention on Mary Ann GORMAN's admission record shows that he is still alive in 1899.

I am looking for any information on when and where he died.  I can't find him on the 1901 census and I also cannot trace 44 Hine Street, Burdett Road, Poplar on any map.  Any help appreciated.  I hope this is the right board on which to post this.

Where was he born as per earlier census records?  Any marriage for him?  Have you looked under Duke?

His mother married Hugh Russell Gorman in 1869

Did you try Scotland?  Hugh Gorman was b Scotland and there is a 1901 entry for a William Duke b 1859 England living in Ayrshire as a boarder - no wife.

Can't say if it's the right entry but a possibility perhaps?

In 1881 Hugh Gorman and son Hugh b England are living in Glasgow.  Nothing in Scotland for William under either surname

Have you found him on the 1891?

It's actually Hind Street, Poplar (not Hine Street as written in the record).

No sign of William at 44 in 1901 census.

Thanks for all these replies.  For some reason I didn't get emails to say that these replies had been posted.  I have all the info on Mary Ann's marriage and William appears as William Gorman on the 1871 census and had assumed the surname GORMAN after Mary Ann had married Hugh Gorman.  The next year (1872) Mary Ann had another son (Henry) but she was then put in an asylum.  Hugh GORMAN (Father) took his son (also Hugh GORMAN) and moved back to Scotland.

William James DUKE was born in the workhouse in 1859, Greenwich and it is his death date I am seeking.   I know her son Henry was brought up by another shoe maker (Edward Mitchell) but have no clue what happened to William.  I was surprised when I saw his name on Mary Ann's admission records,
