You say he was baptised at St Matthews Church, Walsall - what information does the baptism entry give.
Is this relevant to your John

There is a long article in the Lancaster Gazette, Saturday, July 7, 1838 about "an affray with Police at Ulverston" involving Thomas and Margaret PARK and John, Betsey and Joseph ATHERSMITH. John is described as an "old man". (They were found guilty except Betsey, and sentenced to one and three months prison.) Probably the item mentioned by Rosie above. Is this your family? I can send you a copy of the article if you'd like.
Modified to add:
And a description of the "affray" in the Westmorland Gazette, Saturday, June 2, 1838

Another article July 2, 1842 in the Westmorland Gazette:
" ... William Iddon and John Watkinson, mariners; John Athersmith snr., and John Athersmith jnr, and Joseph Athersmith, nailors; and Margaret Park, widow were each summoned for willfully treading down a field of grass belonging to Mr. Parker of the Sun Inn. Ordered to pay damages and costs."

There is a baptism in Walsall for a John Athersmith with parents Joseph & Ann but it is on 22 Apr 1780
I can't see a death for a wife Jane in Ulverston though there is one for a Mary in 1847 age 68.
Where and when did John marry Jane.
Could you please give the names of John & Janes children with years and places of birth
There are certainly plenty of newspaper articles about the Athersmiths in Ulverston ;D

I'm wondering about wife "Jane" - are you sure of this?
There is this family in 1841 at Rattenrow, Ulverston:
Margaret Park 30 Lancashire
Ann Park 6 Lancashire
John Park 3
James Park 1
John Smith 65
Mary Smith 60
Sarah Smith 16
Thomas Smith 12
James Dixon 30
Margaret Dixon 25
George Tyson 35
Mary Tyson 30 Ireland
Mary McIntire 65
Mary Archer 20 Lancashire
John Brownlee 25 Ireland
Elizabeth Carter 20 Lancashire
H0107/531/21 pg35
The "SMITH"s could well be ATHERSMITH. James DIXON was the person who started off the "affray" in the 1838 case.
Posting at the same time as Rosie - :D
