My GATEHOUSE family came originally from Mere but pre-1901, moved across the border to Dorset where many of the children married and settled with their own families.
Frederick GATEHOUSE m Elizabeth Ann PARFITT in 1866
Eight children from this marriage:
Sarah Jane m Sidney Lanning ALDRIDGE in 1890
Frederick m Emma Jane BURT in 1891
William m Sarah Kate ALFORD in 1895
Lucy m Charles GATCUM in 1900 (my ggparents)
Rosa m Charles Robert LOPEZ in 1898
Albert m Florence Martha GOODFELLOW 1906
Florence Mary m (possibly William HERRIDGE or Charles LOVELL) 1903
Arthur Ernest m (possibly Katherine Mabel REID) 1911
Any connections out there?
I would especially like to confirm the marriages of the last two siblings, Florence and Arthur.

Hi Joy,
I take it that you wish to confirm the marriages of Florence and Arthur which took place after 1901, after the family had moved to Dorset.
I'd be pleased to help if either of these 2 married in Wiltshire ;). If they did, do you know where?
If they married in Dorset, you may wish to post the request on the Dorset board.

Hello Dave and thanks for your kind offer.
Florence's marriage was registered in Shaftesbury, Dorset (I've also posted on the Dorset board).
Arthur's marriage was registered in Mere, Wiltshire:
Arthur Ernest GATEHOUSE Q2 1911 (5a.461) and an entry the same quarter for Katherine Mabel READ (5a.462a) ... a good candidate for Arthur's wife.
If you have access to the registers, could you confirm Arthur's father for me please. I'm hoping it's Frederick GATEHOUSE, blacksmith. Any other information (occupation/residence/witnesses etc) would be gratefully received.
With kind regards,
Joy

Hi Joy,
I thought this would be easy, with the date of marriage, however the only Gatehouse (G) marriages I could find in Mere between 1908 and 1913 were........
12 Dec 1910 William G 23 bach father John G (deceased) to Gladys Mabel Morgan 23 sp father Eli Morgan (deceased)
17 Apr 1911 George G 23 bach father John G to Kate Ing 42 wid father Tom Ing
13 Nov 1912 Ernest Edward G 28 bach father James Henry G to Laura Mary Brown 21 sp father William James Brown
Can you think where else he may have married? He may have had a registry wedding, or Nonconformist, or RC.
Let me know and I'll have another look
Cheers Dave

Hi Dave
His sister, my great grandmother, Lucy Gatehouse, married in a baptist chapel (in Gillingham). I had thought this was because she'd adopted my ggf's religion, but maybe the Gatehouses were Baptist also. Is/was there a baptist chapel in Mere? If so, I'd be grateful if you could check their records for me.
Kind regards

Joy it all came together when I realised that the marriage did not take place in the Parish of Mere, but the Registration District of Mere ;). There are 12 Parishes so starting in alphbetical order...............I came up with (no prizes for guessing which parish I looked up last)
In the Parish of Zeals 17 Apr 1911 Arthur Ernest Gatehouse, 21, bach, lab, Gillingham, Frederick Gatehouse, Blacksmith married Ethel Emmeline Green, 21, sp, Zeals, Albert Green, Mechanic, by Banns. Witnesses were Alfred Green and Clara Green.
Zeals Church was built in the 1840s and prior to that marriages were in Mere.
Other Gatehouse (G) marriages in 1911
17 Apr George G, 23, bach, lab, Mere, John G, lab and Kate Ings, 42, wid. Mere, Tom Ings, Engineer
16 Sep Charles Allen Hurley, 29, Stourton, Philip Hurley and Lily May G, 25, Stourton, Tom G
Cheers Dave

Dave - thank you so very much for this. Please let me know if I can repay the favour at any time. I'm not a million miles from the Surrey History Centre if you ever need a look-up there.
:-\ 12 Parishes - and it would have to be the last one!
Best wishes,
Joy

You're welcome Joy. Thanks for the offer, at the moment my family does not extend to Surrey, although I did have an aunt who lived in Kingston on Thames! I'll bear it in mind

Hi Joy
This info. may be of no use to you whatsoever, but on my Gt.Grans & Grandfather's (Sophia Ayres & Uriah Gray) wedding cert. Sept.25th 1873 at the parish church Mere one of the witnesses was a Fanny Gatehouse.
No other info. except that I think she must have been a friend of Sophia, as her name is parallel to that of Sophia so probably born about 1853.

Hi and many thanks for that snippet
I think the Fanny you mention is my great great grandfather's (Frederick Gatehouse) sister who was indeed born in 1853
The year after she witnessed your great grandparent's marriage, Fanny ceased to be a Gatehouse when she married George Parfitt in Mere in Dec 1874. I wonder if Sophia was a witness at her wedding....
Thanks again for your response
Kind regards

Hi Joy
Many thanks for that. I have a further snippet of info. from the wedding cert. and that is the other witness was George Parfitt !!Obviously all friends!
It would be interesting to see who the witnesses were at Fanny and George's wedding.

Hi
Does anyone have a Jerome Gatehouse, born 1790 plus or minus about 5 years, probably in Mere, in their tree? Also, does anyone know if records of the inmates of Mere poorhouse exist for the second half of the 18th century?
Thanks

My great grandfather John Alford was in Motcombe and married a Harding. Sarah Kate was a sister to Albert Alford he married Mary Banks in Canada and fought in ww1. I have a site called McDowell families but there are lots of Alford's from Motcome and I am interested in the fellow Essau Alford that married one Jane? Gray from Dorset. Any ideas? This website, which is known to many, has an extensive collection of BMDs for Mere, Stourton and Kilmington which may prove helpful. The compiler's research has been focussed on marriages between these villages. It is by no means 100% correct but is a great resource.

This is in response to silasmarner's message posted back in 2006.
I have a Jeremiah (aka Jerome) Gatehouse baptised in Mere 13 Jan 1799.
He was the son of Jeremiah and Betty (nee Turner).
He married Elizabeth Down in 1821 and they had nine children.
He died in Mere in 1877
Is this your Jerome do you think?
