Title: marriage george child/ann williams
Post by: mrs.c. on Friday 07 February 20 14:04 GMT (UK)
Hi,I have received the marriage cert of george child/ann jones (widow) but i am still not sure it is the right one i am looking for.vol 18 page 698.dec.1838. when i looked at the free bmd again i found the record of an ann williams married hay, brecon vol 26 page 503 a/m/june 1842 but it does not mention who she had married. This could be the right one as there was a child born aug 1842 mary ann child.
I am very confused as i am actually looking for a george child married ann williams as on all the birth certificates of her children her name before marriage was williams  would she have put jones.thankyou janet.

If Ann Williams married a Mr Jones , was then widowed and married again, in theory she should have married as Ann Jones whilst any children born after that marriage should have her maiden name as Williams on their birth certs.

Her children's birth certificates should show their mother's maiden name.

If she was a widow when she married George Child, she will marry in her widow's surname but put her maiden name on the children's birth certificates.

Jones was not her maiden name so should not be on her children's birth certificates with George Child.

You can apply for a copy of the marriage certificate to see who she married which should give her fathers name.

George Jones, 19 in 1851, is 10 in 1841, and he and presumed sister Elizabeth from 1841, are probably Ann's children from her first marriage.
In 1851 census George Jones is from Fernley Heath, have you tried to find a baptism for him?

If there is no Father's name on the marriage certificate then either Ann has forgotten/does not know, or she was illegitimate.

As Ann is already with George in 1841, they could have been married before civil registration.
