Title: RAF Records
Post by: Richview on Wednesday 05 February 20 13:42 GMT (UK)
Good Afternoon,

I sent for my late fathers RAF records and am more than confused. Dad was RAFVR, served from 1941 at the age of 20. As a civilian he was a driver so was attached to 7MTC. I know he was driving HGV boxed aircraft around the UK bases, was stationed at RAF Pembrey, Cardiff Aerodrome, Biggin Hill to name just a few. Looking at his records it mentions not only 7MTC but Balloon Command and a few others. Was it normal for drivers to be sent to other types of service. I did google 7MTC could find nothing, any help would be much appreciated.

A guess.... 7MTC = 7 Motor Transport Company?

7 Mechanical Transport Company formed in Mar 1941 at Anlaby near Hull and moved to Cardiff in April 1942 remaining there until 1946.   A man in  an MT Company by its nature often spent time attached to other units.  He is at two Schools of Technical Training, perhaps for training and at two Balloon Centres, 22 at Redhill and later 24 at Biggin Hill.  AGS could be Anti Gas School at Uxbridge later Salisbury Plain.  61 Maintenance Unit was at RAF Handforth Cheshire. Fairly normal for that sort of tradesman delivering and collecting stores and perhaps personnel around the country..

Max D,

Many thanks. Dad was in Hull for a time, when he arrived in Wales he was stationed at Pembrey twice,
spent a fair amount of time at Cardiff airport and the heavy transport based just outside the City. He often talked about balloons but I wrongly assumed he was with 7MT from the start to end of service!

Thanks again much appreciated.
