My great grandparents (James and Mary Standen) and great uncles and aunts were all born in Wittersham and some were born in/lived in Acton House and one aunt (not sure which one) died there. Anyone have information about James or Mary or their children, James Percy Espenett Standen, Samuel Barnard Standen, Duncan Espenett Standen, Spencer Reginald Standen, Bertha Mildred Martin (Standen) or Ethel Marguerite Pankhurst (Standen), it would be much appreciated.

Have you checked familysearch.org?
Dates will be handy.

I have thanks. Not much there about Acton Hall so I am hoping to hear from locals who know the history of the area.
-
A reasonable number of mentions in the newspapers.
Duncan played the organ at Ethel’s wedding which was quiet, but because the “contracting parties” were well known in the neighbourhood the church was crowded. ;D ;D ;D :D

James Standen married Mary Elizabeth Espenett 26 April 1870, they are easy to find on the census

Welcome to rootschat, Jim.
Have you contacted this group, who seem to meet in Wittersham Village Hall?

In your second reply you put 'Acton Hall'.
I can see Standens living in Acton Lane, or in Little Acton etc but not yet got them in a house named Acton House.
Have you found your ancestors in the censuses?
-
Thanks for the tips. Which newspapers would that have been they are mentioned in?
-
Seem to be predominantly in the
Sussex Agricultural Express - Lewes, Sussex,
But also
Kent & Sussex Courier - Tunbridge Wells
Hastings and St Leonards Observer
Sevenoaks Chronicle and Kentish Advertiser
Etc etc
The newspapers are available online at the British Newspaper archive (first three looks are free)
Or FindMyPast if you already have a sub there.
