This is so cool CaroleW, thank you so much. ;D Lily

Ok so how would i find out if they had children?
-
Struggling to find a Mat(t)hew Hambly/Hambley amongst the muster roll of the Victory.
Can spot a Peter Hambley at Trafalgar, died 1848.
-
Oh, he was a muster.. i saw that on the HMS Victory site but it didn't give names...thanks. ;)

Victory muster list

I don’t think they had any children but if they did - nothing online to support it. Although they married in 1819, Susanna was only around 26 then so I would have expected if they had children, at least one or more would be living with them in 1841
I did wonder whether Matthew was previously married given the age difference but no marital status on the marriage entry
-
Thank you CaroleW
Yes, i noted thier age difference. I can't seem to find him on that list of crew. I appreciate your help. Lily. :)

Hi,
On Ancestry under UK, Naval Officer and Rating Service Records, 1802-1919 you can see
Information re ships on which he served.
Mathew Hambley, Liskard
Port Royal 24.7.1803 to 16.6.1804
There is then a note :- as Hennly? Hard to read, but different spelling of his surname.
And at the Battle of Trafalger
Belleisle 16.6.1804 to 9.1.06
The list goes on ending 31.8.1814
If you do not have Ancestry, it may be possible to access via your local library.
For information on the ship Belleisle:-
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Belleisle_(1795)
And a good painting on https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/774337729654211533/
His service commenced in 1803 when he was aged 20 years, so born 1783.

Ok, so i went to the records office today. It's the main hub for Cornwall and a lady there found Mathew Hambley's was baptised on the 20/12/1778 in a place called St Pinnock which isnt' far from here and managed to get his parent's names being that of William and Elizabeth Hambley so that was a move forward although i don't know any more about his parents and don't know where to go next with that one. Also i need to get in touch with the naval archives to locate the HMS Victory and i know if a ship was wrecked then they named the new ship the same name so i know the year Nelson fatally was shot which was in 1805 then thats where ive got to search next.

Have you tried Cornwall OPC?

With some difficulty I found the newspaper article in the the Cornish Telegraph of 19 March 1862 (page 3). It records the name as Matthew Hambley, not Mathew Hambly.
-
Oh Hanes. What is OPC?
-
Thanks Shaun....i will look it up.
-
That date would be his death Shaun

Oh Hanes. What is OPC?
Didn't you click on the link?
-
Sorry no, i didn't. I'll do that now thanks

The GRO death index also records the spelling of the name as Matthew Hambley.

Hi lilylangtree
Have you obtained access to Ancestry UK, Naval Officer and Rating Service Records, 1802-1919 ?
These clearly show all the ships on which a Mathew Hambley of Liskard served.
Did not understand your comment
“ i need to get in touch with the naval archives to locate the HMS Victory and i know if a ship was wrecked then they named the new ship the same name so i know the year Nelson fatally was shot which was in 1805 then thats where ive got to search next. ”
The ship on which Hambley served on during the battle of Trafalgar was the Belleisle, this ship was badley damaged and towed to Gibralta 33 died many were wounded as was her Captain William Harwood.
These are the dates when Mathew Hambley served on various ships:-
Port Royal. 1803 - 1804
Belleisle. 1804 - 1806
Egyphinne. 1806 - 1807
Galiah. 1807 - 1808
Blake. 1808 - 1813
Freida. 1813 - 1814. His service ended 1814.
The details recorded give day and month he joined and left the various ships, I have not typed these.
The record states he was 20 when he joined, but he could have given incorrect age. However the information about being at the Battle of Trafalgar, ties in with the above record just not actually on
The ship Victory.
I would urge that you access the above records.

Thank you Spendlove for your indepth message. What i meant was that i heard he was on the Victory when Nelson was shot but that i recently was made aware that if a ship was badly damaged to the point that it was un sailable, then the next new ship that was built, that they would re name it for example Victory. I shall for sure write down all that you have wrote as it is valuable information and more than i could have wished for. I'm new to all this rsearching so I'm not sure how to look for things. I appreciate you help so thank you again..
-
Also Spendlove, what you are finding and saying makes perfect sense as to why the Cornish archives head office could find him either on the ship Victory! Thank you again...Lily 😀

Hi,
The thing when researching is that many family stories are not true, they may contain some facts with added untrue stories. The same applies to items in the Newspapers. Think this is the case with Mathew, he was at the Battle of Trafalgar just not on the Victory.
I can see the Baptism of Mathew At St. Pinnock, 1778 with parents William & Elizabeth, it is important to note on this record that they were from Liskard.
Think you need to find when they married and if they had other children. It is also important to note
That on the 23March 1779 a William Hambley of Liskard was buried at St. Pinnock. No age is given
So it could be a child, but if it was William the father of Mathew then it is likely that Elizabeth married again.
Are you related or just interested in the newspaper article.

I appreciate how truths can be mixed up and stories added and that we can only assume a lot of stuff and information. I've got him as being baptised in Pinnock on the 20th Dec 1778. Parents William and Elizabeth Hambley. I have Mattew born in Liskeard in 1778. He died at that age of 84 in 1862.
He married Susanne Couch on the 14th May 1819. He was considerably older than she around 17 years. I have found no children. I wonder if he re married and therefore may of had children with his first wife....speculation of course.
I resently joined the Old Cornwall Society and I'm doing this research for the society so that any family members who may be researching their own family history, will at least have some information that i will leave in the archives for them to have. Often people come into oir museum enquiring for any information. As i ssy, I'm new to it all but i find it facinating and interesting and what a way to spend my free time. Everyone's a winner!
