Good day
I would like to get more information regarding Arthur Albert Mason Woulidge. Born April 1867, Radford, Nottinghamshire. Was "sent" (?) to South Africa. Why, when, how, etc would be appreciated. Criminal record? Secondly, did he participate in the Second Boer War? Any medals received? Any/all other information regarding him? He is my Step-Great Grandfather. Who were his parents and siblings, etc.
Thank you in anticipation

1871 census shows him as the son of Benjamin (60) and Eliza (22) living with them and 2 younger siblings in Shardlow Leicestershire.
1881 census has the same family group but a different address in Shardlow.

Thank you Nanny Jan and Sandra.
Sandra, the Breakwater Convict Station intrigues me. Is there any.information that you have regarding why he was sent there? I also believe he was sent to the Valkenberg Hospital in Cape Town due to a drinking problem? My Grandfather (Wilfred Thomas Woulidge - don't have the names of his siblings unfortunately) used to visit him there, I am told. I also do not have access to the sites that you sent via link, unfortunately.

The family search links sent by Sandra are free to access once you register, which is also free.

Thank you Nanny Jan, will try to log in.
Sandra, the data you have is fantastic, thank you very much. I see his occupation is listed as overseer. Can you find any information as to why he went to South Africa?

Sandra, I think both the Woulidge as well as the Bosman ancestors survived the war, so surely they wouldn't be listed on the war graves site?
-
I've been told that Woulidge was on the British side and Bosman on the South African side.
-
My thoughts at the time were wandering towards military cemeteries for veterans/offspring :-\
Happy Hunting.

Hello :)
Here is a little bit to get you started on tracing your British side, it looks like there are a few puzzles for you to investigate.
You can find Benjamin with his first wife Elizabeth here in 1861 also with them is Eliza Hutchinson... given as niece :-\

Hi
My name is Sue Woulidge, my husband is John Woulidge and that’s his family name. I have a lot of the family tree if your interested and details of the South African side of the family but unfortunately no details of how or why they were sent to South Africa.

Hi Susie60
Thank you for the response. I see I am a couple of years late ( ;D), however never saw your response. I am very interested in this part of my family tree and would appreciate any details that you may be able to provide? This is for both the English as well as the South African side of the family.
