Hi I am trying to locate birth records of my great grandfather Albert Cook who was born on 3rd Dec 1897, lived in Salford, however can’t find any record of him on the birth index, is there any other way to locate him?
Thanks

Hello,
Do you have further details of him which you could cross reference? Do you have his mother’s maiden name?
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/birthsearch.php
The above site shows
1897 Albert Cook Salford (Broughton)
1898 Albert Cook Salford (Pendleton)
1898 Albert Cook Salford (Regent Road)
GRO will show maiden names.

There are three Alberts in 1901 census who fit those three areas so hopefully one is yours.
-
His birth registration is probably in the first quarter of 1898.

I didn't read the birthdate ::)
That reduces it to two - mother Jarvis or McGrane. You can cross reference siblings using mother’s name.

Thanks everyone, I have the 1939 England and Wales register which is where I got the dog from and that tallies up with his children, I also have 1901 and 1911 census that shows mother and feather as John and sarah jane Cook

Family search has the family separately
Here is Albert with brother Sam

And the rest of the family - mother absent

John COOK and Sarah Jane HOWARTH married in 1881 at Salford. You can see the birth registrations of their children here:
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp
COOK, ALBERT
Mother's maiden surname: HOWARTH
GRO Reference: 1897 March Quarter in SALFORD Volume 08D Page 91
A birth in the March quarter 1897 does not match your Albert however plenty of people did not know exactly when they were born.
This birth and baptism matches your Albert:
There is a baptism for your Albert Cook (Cooke) on Lancashire Parish clerks project. Baptised on 15th Dec. 1897 father James Cooke mother Eliza. Abode 20 Trafford Street. Fathers occupation, Street musician
The date of birth on that baptism is 3 Dec 1897.
COOK, ALBERT
Mother's maiden surname: JARVIS
GRO Reference: 1898 March Quarter in SALFORD Volume 08D Page 146
December births were often registered in the first quarter of the following year.

Did your Albert marry? If so, what name and occupation did he give for his father?

There is a tree with those parents but after this research, it would seem to be wrong.
-
I think he must be the one with mmn JARVIS (Eliza). Have a look on the 1911 for the same address as the 1939.

Annie, Samuel, and Albert all have the same mother (JARVIS) on their birth registrations, (first name Eliza on the baptisms). I think that the older children had a different mother.
James is noted as being blind in 1891 and the baptism of Annie has him as an organ grinder, Samuel's as a blind street musician, and Albert's as a street musician.

Just click on search on left hand side and then enter the details.
There are two deaths in 1918 for Albert Cook birth 1897/8 but unfortunately Lancs BMD and Lancs opc do not have details.

Were surnames often spelt wrong as have Cook and Cooke
-
There are often different spellings for the same name - there are not necessarily wrong, just different. If the person could not read, when their name was being recorded, they could not say - that is not how we usually write it - so it would not be corrected to the 'normal' way. What is normally 'Cook' for one person could become 'Cooke' for the same person over different times. Their children could use either or stick to one of them.
