That looks very similar to the battleship HMS Vanguard which was launched November 1944 and so took no part in WW2.

Yes, certainly a warship not a Defensively Equipped Merchant Ship (although that doesn't preclude him from having served on her in some other capacity).

Do you have a Royal Navy service record for your dad? If you have, is there any chance you could post it on this board?
Would agree with Imber. Probably HMS VANGUARD. She had distinctive back sloping funnel tops.
