Title: Help with Madden Surname
Post by: Robdev019 on Tuesday 14 January 20 19:05 GMT (UK)
Hi I have a dilemma. I am trying to work out the Madden surname of the parents of Mary Jane Rodger (Orr) it looks like Mary Jane Gordon but when i look for a Marriage certificate on SP i cannot find one. I know David was Married to Susan McCrory who died 1901 and assume he re-married as he was relatively young. Any tips help would be appreciated.

Mary Jane's maiden name does look like Gordon.

When Mary Jane Jnr married George Orr (1908, Port Glasgow), what details did she give for her mother? Have you looked for her birth cert?

Mary Jane Jnr was born c. 1889 (if she died aged 71 in 1960), have you found her in the censuses around that time?

Is this wife Susan's death in Port Glasgow?

Susan RODGER
Age 35
1901
574/ 83
Port Glasgow

I can't see a Scottish marriage for them  :-\ Is there an Irish connection here?

Hi Kay99, This is getting closer Mary Love was a spinster but David Rodger was a widower. cannot make out the name of Marys Mother but the two witnesses are John and Margaret Gordon

There is a 40 yr old David Rodger, contractor and born Ireland, showing as a prisoner in Port Glasgow for 1901? Is this Mary Jane's father?

Have you found Mary Jane Jnr in the censuses?

Hi Monica, That is the same David on the 1901 census the children are all on the 1901 census with the mother and father missing... mother died 1901 and father was in jail in port glasgow.

Marriage for Susan and David is on SP isn't it, 1882 in Port Glasgow.

And in 1891:

David Rodgers 36 coal dealer b, Donegal*
Susan Rodgers 30 b. Port Glasgow
David Rodgers 8 b. Port Glasgow
Margaret Rodgers 7 b. Port Glasgow
Mary Jane Rodgers 3 b. Clydebank, Dumbartonshire
Rebecca Rodgers 2 Months b. Clydebank, Dumbartonshire
William Mcelhiney 23 boarder b. Donegal

Address: 7 Elgin St, Clydebank, Old Kilpatrick

So you have all the details to confirm that Mary Jane's mother was Susan McCrory (birth and marriage). It is only in her death registration that the informant has made a mistake with her mother's details isn't it. A pain when this happens, but it did happen that mistakes crept in if the informant made mistakes or simply didn't know the right details.

Monica

PS: Lots of potential siblings showing for David in Donegal on Family Search indexes, with parents David and Mary (Curran).

Susan McCrory is my ancestor .Her mum was Mary Madden or Maddigan .She was born in Ireland and married John McCrory in Ireland then immigrated to the Port .
