I know from other reading that Queen Victoria had holidays in the Brighton area. My mother told me that family legend says that my 3rd great-grandfather, William Stredwick, "took care of the Queen's horses." I know he lived & died in the Brighton area (1795-1866.) I wonder if the Queen kept horses in Brighton or had a stable there? I know it may only be legend but often legends have a kernel of truth, which I'd love to uncover! Are there any historical resources or records that tell about Queen Victoria's activities in Brighton that might give me clues?

More King Edward VII, when he was Regent. He had the Royal Pavilion built in Brighton and certainly had stables - they hae now been turned into the Brighton Dome.

I believe it was George IV when Regent.

Yes, definitely not Edward VII - too late.

Does not really matter which royal it was, deblouky55 has not got back to this post.

I was thinking more the time period in relation to her ancestor in Brighton.

Google suggests Victoria's visits to Brighton were between 1837 & 1845.

Thanks to everyone for those clues! I'm sorry I was absent the discussion for a time while dealing with travel and then illness. I did read through the links that were sent in the first reply....very interesting history. It sounds like my ancestor could perhaps have taken care of "the Queen's horses." But I'll probably never know for sure!

It might be worth checking to see if estate records still exist for the Royal Pavilion and the other associated buildings, if they do then there may be a record of employees and their wages , duties etc.
It used to be looked after by the Brighton and Hove council but on the 1st April this year was transferred into the care of the Royal Pavilion and Museums Trust together with all of the associated buildings such as the Corn Exchange. With the current pandemic situation that may not have taken place of course.
I'd suggest initially contacting the Brighton and Hove museum as they may have a record of what remains of the original estates records for the pavilion and its associated buildings or be able to point you in the direction of who may have that information.
