Post by: Schorsch on Friday 03 January 20 10:04 GMT (UK)
Happy new Year !!!
Dead man lives longer? Two brothers , twins, born in Cologne in 1831. Ones name is Mathias Victor, the other is Mathias. Mathias Victor dies on 31.10.1876 in Edinburgh. Mathias dies in 13.08.1882 in Cologne. But.......until 1903 i can find him  ::) in Lothian Road, Warrander Park Road. Any Suggestion
how this is possible?

Triplets?  ;)

Does the Cologne death certificate name the parents?

What is your source for Matthias being in Warrender Park Road? I can't find him in the census after 1871.

Could he be a son or relative?

You mention the year 1903. Is this year from the PO directories?

No, it is until 1902, 1903 his son in law is still living there (and his daughter). His son died 1882 in Cologne.

I'm confused now.

You said that one Mathias Schnitzler died in Edinburgh in 1876 and his twin brother died in Cologne in 1882. They were born in 1831 so the one in 1902 is unlikely to be their father.

Mathias d 1876 is in the 1871 census aged 40, a tobacconist, with a wife aged 50 and no children.

The one in the street directory is a print seller, picture framer etc. I presume that the son-in-law is Wilhelm Kuhn, who married Susanne Schnitzler and lived in Craigcrook Road, as discussed in
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=820654.0

So who were Susanne's parents? She died in 1940 aged 80, so was born around 1860. She could hardly be a sister of these two Mathias Schnitzlers? Was she the daughter of one of them?

Could it be that Wilhelm Kuhn took over the Mathias Schnitzler business in Lothian Road and just used the business name of his deceased father-in-law?

No, you are not confused, it's all right what you suggest. I wrote in the beginning of the twins, Mathias and Mathias Victor, he had no children. Susanne was the daughter of Mathias Schnitzler, her husband Wilhelm Kuhn.
I was confused, because i read his name in the post directories after his death. But i guess you are right and Wilhelm Kuhn took over the business and used the name.
Thank you Forfarian, so no dead Mathias walk around in Edinburgh. 😅

There's a classified advertisement in The Scotsman of 25 November 1876 according to which MRS SCHNITZLER begs to inform the Public that she intends continuing her late husband's business as CARVER, GILDER and PICTURE FRAMEMAKER, and respectfully requests a continuance of public favour. Edinburgh, 19 Lothian Road.
