Title: What happened to this couple ?
Post by: sunflower on Thursday 02 January 20 17:17 GMT (UK)
Thomas Harwood married Ann Cotton 23.12. 1764 at North Wingfield then they completely disappeared.  I can't see any children to them or any baptisms for either or any burial.

So what happened to them?

I can't see any further trace of them either, but I do notice that she was Ann Cocking, not Cotton.
There were several other Cocking weddings at North Wingfield over the next few years, but neither Thomas or Ann shows up as a witness.

If there are no children/baptisms - are you connected to them pre-marriage?

Have you checked for deaths for them?

On a CD of North Wingfield PR's that I have it gives her name as Cotton, but I notice FindMyPast gives it as Cocking.

My Ancestor was Elizabeth Cotton who also married in NW in the same year.  She is one of my many brick walls so I decided to see if I could find anything about Ann that may give me some clues as to where the family were from.

Thanks

Definitely Cocking on the original entry.  A Charles Cocking was one of their witnesses

There is an Elizabeth Cotton marriage to a George Hopkinson 31.12.1764 North Wingfield.

A tree on Ancestry shows her father as John Cotton and the birth of a son George and her death in 1813 in Brackenfield

Whether it's reliable I'll leave you to judge as it shows her birthyear as 1752 which would make her 12yrs old when she married !!  It also shows a baptism in Dublin in 1752 and a further baptism in Staffordshire in 1753??

George Hopkinson was supposedly born 1733 died 1820

Thanks Carole,   I hadn't seen the original.

I try not to look at the tree's on Ancestry as they put me in too much of a bad mood !!!!

Might be worthwhile searching for an emmigration by the couple to North America or the West Indies.
