Title: Dr Ada Jackson-where am I going wrong?
Post by: katiespitfire on Thursday 02 January 20 10:29 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help?

I'm researching Dr Ada Jackson who ran a practice in Hull at 255 Anlaby Rd. Now, I have her date of birth, and I thought that she died in 1942, but now I'm still finding mention of her in the Hull Daily Mail in 1944.
I followed a link to a burial, but it's not her (Eastern Cemetery) and now I'm floundering.  Where am I going wrong? I have approached it from various angles on Find My Past and I'm stuck.

Ada M (possibly Maria) Jackson.  6th Aug 1869

She was still living at 255 Anlaby Rd with Gwenllian Bevan on the 1939 register but after that I can't find her. She had a sister, Miss Florence Jackson (b1884)

I've tried wildcards but I can't help thinking that either I'm doing something terribly wrong in my searches, or FindMyPast isn't worth the money.

Any help gratefully recd.

Kate

Have you restricted the death to Hull? Do you know where she died?

It's a common name and she may have retired from the area or gone into practise elsewhere.

I haven't, I did initially and then tried a general search. I thought that with her being a Dr she might have been easier to research!

Wonder if she retired abroad

What's confused me is the mention of her in Hull in 1944. Have even checked the migration lists...nada!

Have you considered the death registration in Hull - March quarter 1956 - Ada Jackson aged 86  :-\

Does the article actually say she's alive in 1944 or an anecdote, reference of her life?

She should have a will or probate have you looked for that?

Thank you, if it's 255 Anlaby Rd that's her for sure. Yes the quotes in the Hull Daily Mail were regarding an event in 1944 so that makes sense.

so, can I ask is Find My Past not worth the money because I can't find that death anywhere...I'm not a total novice but it just seems to hinder me at every turn!

again thank you.

Don't restrict the birth year to 1869 - it is there I have bought it up. Death is on both Ancestry and FindMyPast and cert. must say estimated DOB 1870.

Ah, that would be it.

Thank you.

I have to say that I find FindMyPast very useful.  However, like every other site, it does not cover every aspect of every part of our research.

And, searching in the B M D section, using Ada Jackson, born 1869+/- 2 years - she is the third entry - year of birth = 1870, year of death = 1956, Location = Hull.

Remember, especially on death certs, that the information on the cert. is only as good as the person registering knows.

Couple of sources for Ada on Ancestry - UK, Medical and Dental Students Registers, 1882-1937 and UK Medical Registers, 1859-1959. Ada registered as a student in 1899 and is listed in the register until 1955. The Medical Registers may be available in some large libraries or university libraries as well as the Medical Directory. You sometimes get additional qualification in the directory.

I have just seen this thread. I was very interested in what you may have found out about the life of Ada Jackson as I have been researching the life of Gwenllian Rawlinson Bevan [1887-1950]. She was a trained dispenser, who served in WWI. In the 1939 Register she is living in the same house as Ada Jackson at 255 Anlaby Road, Kingston Upon Hull. As they both had a medical background I wondered what role they died in might have carried out in WWII? Gwenllian Bevan was still living at that same address when she died in 1950.

Yes! That's the lady.

I'm writing a book about a number of the local medical women in Hull and Gwen popped up in relation to Ada. Ada had a practice with another female GP at the same address but she died after service overseas.
I often drive by the address and think of them both. It's split into two units now, a bargain beer shop and a fish and chip shops.

That sounds really interesting. You must let me know when the book is available.

I think it will be a while! :D

Are you related to Gwen? I've only come across a photo of her father online, I'd love to see what she looked like.
