Hi everyone,
I am trying to find a family connection for Howard James Hemming(s) b.Dec 1868, bapt 1 Jan 1869 Burford, Oxfordshire.
My 5xgt grandparents William Long (1737 Hanborough) and Ann Edgington had son Stephen (1781 Hanborough) m. Elizabeth Horn. Their son George Long (1810 Hanborough) m Charlotte Slatter Lay (her parents William Slatter Lay and Jane Archer (Jane of ?Burford).
On the 1881 census Hanborough, Charlotte is a widow and has Howard age 12yrs - nephew - living with her. On the GRO Index, his mother's maiden name was Bunting. The only Bunting I could find married to a Hemming/s was Mary Ann b.19 Mar 1834 Burford - parents James Bunting and Sarah Watts. Mary Ann died Feb 1870 (3A 530) and buried 24 Feb 1870 - age 36yrs in Burford.
She was married to William Hemming/s on 24 July 1867 at Fulbrook, Oxfordshire.
I found Howard on an 1871 census for Burford at No.9 Priory Lane - age 2yrs - a boarder - with a James Burden, wife Susan and their family.
I can't for the life of me find how Howard was a nephew of Charlotte Long nee Slatter Lay and am hoping someone may be able to help me sort this out or at least point me in the right direction, please. I've had a lot of trouble trying to find siblings for Charlotte so haven't bee able to cross match with those.
I would be really appreciative of any assistance whatsoever you may offer as I'm truly stuck.

Keep in mind that relationships on census were not accurate.I think the marriage you have found is likely correct, you need to trace William after Mary Ann's death.Tree on Ancestry shows Charlotte's brother as William b 1818.

I haven't done any research on the family yet, but this article may help?

and death in 1931

but unfortunately doesn't give further info about his family in Burford.

This may be a complete red herring but in 1871 a William Hemming, 33, widowed, born Burford, is living with his mother, Susannah, in Burford. Included in the household is Ann Slatter, 48, servant. Both Susannah and Ann are born Church Handborough. (Taken from Family Search 1871 - sorry, I cannot give you the reference)
PS William - engineer in iron works in 1871.
1841 - family includes sister Fanny
William Hemming, son of William and Susannah, baptised 24 Dec 1837, Fulbrook.
-
Parents are William and Mary Ann from baptism. William is an engineer.

27 January 1927 - Gloucestershire Echo

12 Mar 1836
Marriage Place: Oxford, St Ebbe, Oxfordshire, England
William Hemming m Susannah SLATTER LAY
Is she a sister of Charlotte, so means nephew should be great nephew

Charles EAST married Fanny HEMMING at Oxford Dec qtr 1856. She was baptised at Burford 1836 (parents William and Susannah), brother to William born c1838.

Hi Everyone,
I do apologize for the delay in replying and feel somewhat embarrassed as have been searching for info for ages and don't know how I missed some of what you've all sent me.
Most of the Ancestry Trees I looked at didn't have sibs for Charlotte and I couldn't find her baptism in any of the neighborhood church registers around Hanborough so was stuck there. Thought her father William may have moved around a lot - m. Susan Lankspear.
I also found the 1871 census for William Hemming and mother and thought it may have been him but wasn't sure. I will have to look at Ann Slatter. Being an Engineer was the only common thread for William Hemming to connect records. I think Susannah Slatter Lay may be a sister of Charlotte as this is the only family named "Slatter Lay" that I've come across in the registers.
Thank you all for everything you sent me. No wonder I couldn't find Howard - went to South Africa and did really well for himself.
I'll keep searching given what I have now and hopefully I can fill in some gaps in Charlotte's family and put the Hemmings in some sort of order too.
If you come across any more info I would be really grateful.

Hi,
I saw today that William Hemming had married Mary Jane Clifton on 21 Apr 1862 at Wigginton, Oxfordshire but she died 1866 leaving him with a son Frederick William bapt 24 Mar 1863. Frederick is with William on the 1871 census with Charles East then in 1881 with grandma Susannah in Burford.
Susannah Slatter Lay bapt 14 Aug 1803 Hanborough, is the sister of Charlotte.

William Slatter 1780 – March 1849 • GHVL-WJP(familySearch) married Susannah Lay
1778 – 15 June 1835 • GHVL-F5M and the family took both last names to form "Slater Lay"

Wondering if anyone has any further grandparents of Howard James Hemming. I am a Hemming and my Great Great Grandfather was John James Hemming, born around the same time frame...20th of September 1860, but in Worminghall, Buckinghamshire. His father was William James Hemming born in 1821 in Piddington, Oxfordshire. I'm wondering if my line are cousins of yours??
This is very interesting! Best of luck with all your research everyone!
