Title: Rugby cap photo
Post by: hopeless24 on Tuesday 31 December 19 12:24 GMT (UK)
Can anyone identify this badge? Thought to be a Rugby cap.

It reminds me of my father's Allan Glen's cap from a similar time. Certainly the colours are the same. It could be worth trying to contact the current team (or the school) to see if they can help.

The problem is that I don't know which club or school it is from.

Letters in the badge are:-

A C S
A S C
C A S

and all other combinations etc.

It is not Rugby School.

Could the 'C' be a 'G' as there is a double serif on the lower end and a single on the top one?

Yes Pari. Could well be G.

Certainly three Letters, with an A and an S.

A..... Grammar School?

Because it refers to a certain year overlapping or two years on the trot.

It could be someone's initials.

I have been awarded prizes and they gave me a choice of Cap or Tie from the Gents Outfitters or a Book.

They give you Vouchers, but I like books, but the Cap or Tie was to be embroidered with your initials.

Anyone in your family (or the family that the Cap belonged to) with those three initials?

My Grandmother won a Scholarship to Grammar School c.1920 and her initials are printed on her School Case we have.

Nothing to do with Rugby School. It belonged to someone who played Rugby & lived in Cambuslang.

I would agree with Blanched Allan Glens School (AGS) is a possibility - although most of the school associations used the official crest it's possible that on a cap the initials were more appropriate
Try contacting the current team at Bishopbriggs https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/allanglens/contact
or the former Pupils Association at http://www.allanglens.com/

School might be a unlikely - born in 1904 - so he would be 17 or 18. I don't know when he left school.
However he was paying national insurance by middle of 1922. He also enrolled at the Glasgow School of Arts in 1922 - did they have a rugby team???

I've contacted a family member who may still have my Dad's cap. If so, I'll get her to take a photo and we can see if they match. Someone who lived in Cambuslang would be quite likely to go to one of the Glasgow selective schools.

If he did go to Allan Glens (opened in 1853) it is entirely possibly that he was playing for the "Old Boys" team by the dates mentioned.

As far as I'm aware the School of Arts didn't have a Rugby team (at least they didn't in the 1960's) although their initials GSA would also fit the cap.

Just had a quick look at Allan Glens School and it is looking a possibility.
Blanched - thank you for your trouble - it would be interesting to know if they are similar.

Worth looking into, if you think it might be this school? ...

Thanks Falkyrn for the links. I have sent an email asking if I can forward the photo to see if anyone can confirm.
Thanks Bushinn1746 - Interesting that was a winning year. More likely to still have info for year

Also during 1922 Allan Glen's School according to newspapers were quite involved in Athletics (Athletics News), had their own Cadet Corps (Rifle Shooting) and Rugby scores briefly mentioned (one line references).

No success so far in finding the cap. The hunt continues! Let us know if you hear from the school.

Is it a Velvet soft material? Rather than a firmer cap shape.

Like a Graduation Bonnet?

Worn by graduates of higher degrees such as a Master or Doctorate or worn by the Head of the school or university, other school officials and Professors.

Unlike the mortar board cap which is square in shape, the tam is actually circular in shape and are fluffy to look at when worn and are usually made out of velvet.

I have not actually seen it - it certainly looks like velvet. However I'm 99% sure he did not go to any university and we have been led to believe he was 'capped' for rugby.

Thanks Treetotal. Although it would not have been military the website has some similar ones. However there is a lack of references to Scotland. I have also found some links on it, including one that is a 'cap detective'. Will give that a try.

I have established that the cap is velvet and that it was made by Rowan & Co, 104 Argyle Street, Glasgow. I have tried to contact Scotland Rugby News but was unable to upload a picture. I sent an email to ask them for further information but as yet had no reply. I have contacted the University of Glasgow archives, who have responded very quickly (as usual) giving some further ideas including one - Sports Heritage Scotland to whom I have just sent the details. I have also contacted Glasgow City Archives but as yet I have had no response. My initial email that I sent to Allan Glen rugby club remains unanswered.
I would like to thank you all for your suggestions & help. Will let you know if I am successful.

It might not be a rugby cap at all.  The c probably represents 'club'.  I've seen similar caps from even earlier with RFC for Rangers, but is it possible that this is an athletic club, I wonder?

This is an Edinburgh Accies rugby cap, so it does seem like it might be a similar name - something like Shawlands Academy - just a thought?

Some strong similarities between the two. Where is/was Shawlands Academy? I wish I knew where he was educated - nothing known before work & Glasgow School of Art but lived in Cambuslang from birth in 1904 until 1929 when he moved south of the border.

Shawlands Academy is in Glasgow, just about two miles west of Rutherglen and Cambuslang is a further two miles away.  I have checked all of the major rugby teams around 1922 and none seem to fit with SA.
