Title: The Great War
Post by: blueal on Monday 30 December 19 17:35 GMT (UK)
It appears I may have 2 relatives that served in the Great War, John Henry Osborn 1873 - 1916 served in the Kings 5th Battalion Shropshire Light Infantry and his son John Osborn  1896 - 1917 served in the Royal Worcester Regiment. To top that I have 3 numbers 28537, 5416 and 9108 relating to various documents, roll calls, signing up papers etc. Could anyone help me out as who's number is who's as I appear to be going round in circles.
Thanks in advance

blueal -- are you sure about the papers you have relating to soldier 5416 please?

Unless there is an error - or the number was the same in 2 battalions for 2 Osbornes, Find My Past has a Joseph Osborne, 5th Battalion, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, who sadly died on 18 Nov 1916 -- with soldier number recorded as 5416.

Same record on Ancestry not seeing a death for a John Henry Osborn

Aah -- on the Commonwealth War Graves site a Joseph Osborne (5416), but no middle name shown, -- is commemorated at Birmingham Yardley Cemetery.

Also on CWGC records. Entry in register includes " E 28537" as grave reference at Birmingham ( Yardley) Cemetery.

Why did I not notice that!! It's right there under his name on CWGC website - so that number is the screen wall reference.

Clearly I need to go to Specsavers.

For info --- there is also a J. Osborne commemmorated on the Birmingham Employers Roll of Honour - from the Shropshire Light Infantry. The Delta Metal Company, Dartmouth St Birmingham. I wonder if that is Joseph.

The grave reference was confusing me :D I presumed that as he was mentioned on the roll of Honour for Birmingham that he was Killed in Action and that the  name in Yardley Cemetery was a memorial for him and others. But it appears he died at home and there is a grave at Yardley. Thanks to all who took the time to put me on the right track...…………….I think  ;)

Hi blueal --- so is it correct that he was Joseph (Henry) then -- and not John Henry?

I can't see his death on the Civil Registration Index actually if he is Joseph.

Is it possible that he was known in the army as Joseph and within the family as John?
