Hello everybody, this is a long shot and just purely out of interest, but does anybody know the history behind the name of this street?
-
MACFARLANE STREET, opened 1815, is named for Alexander Macfarlane of Jamaica, who founded the Observatory which formerly stood on the summit of the Dowhill hill, which is now occupied by a railway company.
A great guide to the history of many Glasgow streets here

Which Macfarlane Street - at one point (around 1900) there were two listed in the Post Office Directories
The first and oldest ran from the Gallowgate to Graeme Street in the east end and the second ran off of Balgraybank Street in the Springburn area.
By the mid 1920's there was a third which ran off of Vulcan Street (Port Dundas area)
Added McFarlane Street Port Dundas later became Broadford Street and McFarlane Street Springburn became Syriam Street

Ha...we need more info then ::)

Then it's the one found by Monica - it first appears in the 1817 Directory of the City as M'Farlane Street and in various maps of the City as McFarlane Street and then MacFarlane Street
