Hi everyone! Looking for a bit of help on deciphering my great great grandmother's maiden name. Her name is Jean Groat, but I can't make out the maiden name! I thought it looked like 'Driver' or 'Dever' but I've done some thorough searches on ScotlandsPeople and the only marriage that comes up that could be my great great grandparents, the name is Jean Moodie, but I don't think the writing on this looks anything like 'Moodie'!
If it helps, they were from Shetland. Thank you :)

It certainly looks like Driver to me.
-
My immediate reading of it was Driver as well.
-
Agree, looks like Driver
-
Thank you all, good to know I'm not going mad! Will continue the search for a Jean Driver.
I've had a bit of spare time recently and I've been looking up lots of birth/marriage certificates, some of which I'm struggling to read.
Is it ok if I post them here rather than starting a new thread?
Very much appreciated, thank you!

Hi There is a Jane Drever married James Groat 1892 in Orkney. Jane Drever death in Orkney 1964. I looked on Scotlands people no Driver , could it be a spelling error.

Hi, thanks so much for your help! Was it scotlandspeople you found Drever on? Certainly could be a spelling error. Will have a look in a few days as quite busy at moment!

Scotlands People has 2265 references to the Driver Name

Yes, you can post them wherever you like.

I suspect they meant no DRIVER/GROAT combination.

Welcome to Rootschat.
No, it isn’t Moodie.
Maybe you should post some information who it is you are looking for, location and a timeframe.
Why did you choose that cert to purchase?
Start from the present, but don’t post names of anyone living, and list the married couples and areas in which they were married.
What certs do you already have and have you found the relevant families on the censuses?

I did find the marraige of Drever/Groat on Scotlands people ,and also meant no marraige between Groat and Driver,

JJ, the image posted is a BC i.e. the child would be surname Groat, problem was the ms of mother as, as you say, no marriage for Driver but there is for Drever.
I can see how the name could be either e.g. in Dundee (Scotland) a Driver (of a car) would be called a Drever, local dialect ;D
Annie
Sorry, crossed post

If the parents married 7/6/1892 (will be on the birth certificate) the surname is definitely Drever.
You'll find her name continually changes between Jane and Jean on the various records.
