Hello,
I wonder if anyone can help with this?
My 2x Great Grandfather was John Measures born 1842 in Normanton Le Heath, Leicestershire.
He married Ann Fearn of Heather, Leicestershire in 1862. It is John's parents and siblings that I am stuck with....well, and further back, but one generation at a time, I think!
I know that my 3x Great Grandfather was also called John Measures, but I don't know his date or place of birth. He was the Son of William Measures born 1769 in Packington, Leicestershire and Ann Hichen born 1770. So that's a bit of history about the Measures family.
So I would like to find out the following things:
1. John Measures Snr's birth details.
2. The date of his marriage to Ann Brian born 1803 in Donisthorpe, Leicestershire and died 1895 in the Ashby de la Zouch area.
3. Details of their children.
I know of just one of my 2x Great Grandfather's siblings, Jane Measures born 1830. I suspect there are many more.
Any help with this family who have become a sticking point for me, would be much appreciated.
Regards
Ian

Re John snr - have you found the family on the 1851 census which will show his birthyear & birthplace
www.familysearch.org
-
Just seen 1851 and Ann has remarried to Joseph Harris so John Measures snr died pre 1851
-
Hi Carole,
I will have a look at the census. Well, this is a surprise, if John Snr died before 1851, maybe there aren't that many more siblings.
Thank you

Wigston Magna - 1 March 1824 - by Banns
John Measures and Ann Brian - botp. John signed, Ann made her mark. Witnesses: William Shipley (x) and Thomas Ward - possible a church official.
Banns called 1, 8 and 15 February 1824.
-
I think this is John’s death - age 44 if it’s the right one
Dec qtr 1844 Ashby de la Zouche 15 10
-
Possible for John's baptism:
Packington - 30 September 1798
John, son of William and Elizabeth Measures.
-
The John Measures birth in March qtr 1842 shows mmn as Bishop
1851 has a son James b 1844 - mmn also Bishop
1841 census has eldest child as Jane aged 11 which does not support an 1824 marriage
Are we talking 2 different families??
-
1851 has a 2yr old dtr Emma Harris. Freebmd shows birth June qtr 1848 and GRO shows mmn as Bishop
-
Ann Measures & Joseph Harris married Sept qtr 1846 Market Bosworth 15 239
-
Burial - Normanton - 14 December 1844 - Normanton is in the Ashby de la Zouch registration district.
John Measures of Normanton aged 46
-
Oh dear, I'm rather confused now and think that there may be mistakes in my family tree!
I know that John Measures born 1842 Normanton Le Heath is definitely correct
-
Carole,
You said
"The John Measures birth in March qtr 1842 shows mmn as Bishop
1851 has a son James b 1844 - mmn also Bishop
1841 census has eldest child as Jane aged 11..."
This is the family.
-
So who is this Bishop lady?
-
Ok, what do you think of this?
On Family search 1841 census, I have found:
Richard Measures aged 4 (this fits)
Jane aged 11 (this fits)
William aged 9
Emma aged 12
Father John Measures aged 45
Mother Ann aged 34
-
Sorry, they're in Nailstone
-
I've just had another look at Familysearch - I'm not skilled enough to work this one out. Can anyone help with this puzzle?
-
The birth registrations which Carole found with mother's maiden name as Bishop indicates that John Measures had married a lady whose surname was Bishop.
There is a marriage:
26 December 1828 - Hugglescote - by Banns
John Measures of the parish of Birstall and Ann Bishop of this parish. Witnesses: Richard Measures and Jane Bishop. All parties made their mark.
-
Ok, having looked at all of this evidence and doing some more digging myself, I believe that my 3x Great Grandfather John Measures is the one born 1798 in Packington and died 1844. I believe that his wife was Ann Bishop born abt 1803 in Nailstone.
I believe that they had four children, all born in Normanton Le Heath:
Jane born 1830
Richard born 1838
John born 1842 (My 2x Great Grandfather)
James born 1844
I believe that Ann Measures (Nee Bishop) married Joseph Harris in 11846 in Market Bosworth and had Emma born 1849
Thank you to all who have been involved.
-
Thank you BumbleB, I saw that and think this is correct.
Thank you

Emma Harris - registered 1848 - Ashby de la Zouch District - mmn = Bishop :)

The births of the children surname Measures who are on the 1851 with Joseph & Ann Harrison are on freebmd. I then checked GRO online & mothers maiden name was Bishop. As it was with Emma Harris
The 2 eldest children on the 1841 census appear to have been named after the 2 witnesses to the 1828 marriage
The only error in your research was with Ann's maiden name. Everything else is correct
The GRO show John as 44 when he died but his burial entry is showing 46 so you will need to bear that in mind when researching him. Richard may possibly have been his brother. The 1851 has 2 Richard Measures in a similar age group - one b 1802 Packington and the other 1806 b Gilmartin.
Given that the 1802 Richard was born Packington if his parents are the same then they were brothers.
Ann's birthplace in 1851 is Donisthorpe & in 1861 Shackerstone

Thank you Carole,
You have obviously spent some time clarifying this for me, which I do appreciate.
kind regards

And I have an Elizabeth MEASURES bapt 10 Jan 1813 Normanton Le Heath. Father Richard, labourer and mother Ann. Ref # on my copy of Bapt Register is DE1771/2 (though I don’t know the origin of that, sorry).
I believe she is the Eliz MEASURES who married George WAKELIN 19 Oct 1830 in Loughborough, All Saints.
Any use??

Hello
Jane Measures b.1829 Normanton le Heath was my 3x Great Grandmother. I was stuck at her parents John/Ann so this thread has been really helpful. Thanks.
-
I have a John Measures in my tree, who married Ann Barsby at Nailstone, in 1806 - is this of any interest?
