Title: The Poad family
Post by: Helina on Sunday 24 November 19 14:09 GMT (UK)
I've been trying to find when this family emigrated to Australia

Henry William Poad born 1830 Bristol Gloucestershire and his wife Harriet Ellen, maiden surname Fry, born 1832 Bristol, had 12 children the 2 eldest children Edward 1851-1852 and Eliza Fry 1853-1924 where born in Bristol.  The next child Matilda 1858-1934 was born in Armstrong Diggings, Ararat, Victoria, Australia.

They must of travelled between 1853-1858 but I cannot find how and when

Any help would be appreciated

There are a couple of obits on TROVE which say he llived in Ararat since 1856.

This one suggests he arrived in Melbourne in 1854 and then to Ararat in 1856.  He was a miner and a blacksmith.

An online tree has a full page reproduction of an article in the Australian Family Tree Connections dated 2002 about him.

This article states that he came to Australia per the clipper Free Trade, arriving in Melbourne in 1854.

There is a contact name for the author of the article which I can PM to you if you want to try and find her but, of course, the article was published 2002.

Edit to add - I am not seeing a ship of that name mentioned on TROVE where most shipping movements are recorded.  There is a Free Trader but this seems to be a small ship doing local voyages.  I can't see him on the PROV immigration site nor on Ancestry's inward shipping.

Thank you Judith and Rosie. The information you have discovered has been most interesting. So Henry came out first and wife and daughter later.

There is a facebook group for the family called

Fowell & Poad Family England.

Henry William Poad and wife Harriet Ellen Fry had 13 children in total

1 girl and 2 of their boys died very young, one daughter and one son both died unmarried with no children.   With all the males gone the Poad surname in Australia died out in 1939.

8 daughters all married and had large families, there are many descendants still living under other surnames Wood, Steed, Miller, Kent, Wallis, Johnson, Jones, Patterson.

Henry W Poad's uncle Thomas Poad moved to New Zealand around 1838.

There is a large number of Poad in New Zealand and some have moved to Australia.
