Title: John Langtree/Langtry Melbourne, Victoria
Post by: Paulmag on Saturday 23 November 19 11:33 GMT (UK)
I am interested in discovering more about John Langtree (sometimes written as Lanktree),
b. 18April 1806 and d. 16May 1876.
He left Ireland some time after 1851 for Australia, having been employed as a Land Agent and having written "The Elements of Land Valuation ..." 1853. Find A Grave locates his burial at Carlton, Melbourne City Cemetery and provides further detail about his Irish parents and his family. Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you for that, Sparrett ... Find a grave website is wonderful for family detail I wasn't aware of. I have a good understanding of his life in Ireland but his life in Australia is pretty much a blank page as far as we in Ireland are concerned. I don't know my way round Australian records and have had difficulty finding any detail on his Australian story between his arrival in the early 1850s and 1876.

This is very promising. I now know about his arrival with family in Australia.

I see an obituary here that tells me about his support for building a church. He certainly had great experience in Ireland as this link might show ... He was the land agent who was responsible for the building of this magnificent residence, Garron Tower.

Octavius died 16 January 1913 at “Carnanton” Camden Park, Tunbridge Wells, KENT UK.

His will is on PROV VIC and makes quite the read. He had property in Australia and NZ.

His wife was Mabel. I can’t see a marriage. In VIC, NZ or UK. Could be in NSW, but NSWBDM is working at the mo.

He also mentions his brother Michael Campbell Langtree of “Hardwicke” YASS NSW. I’d say this is Campbell  who arrived in 1852.

This research is mind blowing. I'm very appreciative to all you Rootschat experts. Your industry was only matched by John and Elizabeth. I had no idea that they had such a large family ... 14 at the last count! One of the elder sons, Matthew died in Brisbane 1859 aged 28. It will take some time to absorb all this detail about the family and descendants. But back to John Langtree 1806-1876 apart from the obituary, I don't see any other reference to him in the Trove Newspaper Archive. His offspring had a higher profile.

It is interesting that LANKTREE brings up so much on Trove.
It is definitely more than a newspaper typing error and it appears to have been completely interchangeable with LANGTREE.

Some family notices, including the death of wife Eliza in 1884, use the surname LANGTREE.

Much of John's employment and professional items use LANKTREE.

His will, which you can download, is in the name John LANKTREE.

Yes, there is an issue with the name spelling. This is common with Irish/Gaelic names which were written phonetically when anglicised and thus leads to many variations. But it's surprising in an English name such as Lanktree. It sometimes appears as Langtree or Langtry.

John's Will is the icing on the cake. I can't wait to read it. Unfortunately it won't download and the advice is that long files may be better downloaded outside office hours.

Paul, you may remember the obituary for John contained a rather lengthy section about a complaint lodged against him during his career and the subsequent deathbed apology by the complainant.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/58153773/5931018

I think the issue was an accusation of corruption in what we would call compensation for the compulsory acquisition  of property required for road development by the Fitzroy Council. In this case Moore Street.

The affair began around July 1855 and moved forward over the next months.

John LANKTREE was one of the arbitrators appointed to decide on appropriate payment to landholders. His son the barrister Henry LANKTREE had bought land in the way of the road only months before the announcement of the acquisition.

The story is that the amount offered by the arbitrator was far in excess of the valuation of the land. Some fellow councillors were outraged and there was a public meeting etc.. and his resignation was requested

I have not been quite able to ascertain who was the primary accuser as it is all quite long-winded :o

Here are few links

March 1855 Henry is advised of Acquisition by council of all or some of his land for the development of Moore Street in Fitzroy
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/4805176

Pg 5 describes the valuation versus the "offer"

Requested to resign 1855

A search of his LANKTREE  confined to 1855 will bring up more.

This is fascinating but very complex. I hadn't spotted the information on the issue of alleged corruption re John Lanktree's arbitration on the value of his son's land purchase.

What I was focusing on was his conflict as Secretary to the Water and Sewage Commissioners with their Engineer over the specifications for pipe work supplied for the supply of water from the Yan Yean reservoir to Melbourne. It's longwinded as you say but intriguing.

Yes. I saw that one too.
Be interesting to know which incident it was that upset him enough that the whole thing became a quite major part of his obituary.
You would think with (what is it?) twelve or fourteen children, and his prosperous circumstances, there would be something more positive to dwell on in reflecting on his life.

Yes, Sue. I found it a curious obituary too with its focus on this row which took place so many years before his death in 1876.
I know that he had been in Australia since 1852 but he had lived 2/3 of his life, 46 years in Ireland. He had spent an important career as a land agent to the Londonderry family there and had achieved much even though it ended badly for him in a court case and insolvency in 1851.
Much of the legal and financial controversy went above my head but I was interested to see that in spite of his financial setbacks, he ended up comfortably off.

A thought:
If History is as much about what we choose to forget as what we decide to remember, no where is it truer than with obituaries.

Hi,

I am John’s 3 x great granddaughter and have undertaken a lot of research about the family in Australia. I am happy to share what I can but this is my first time using this site so not sure of the best way to do so.
