Title: John Tonks 1835
Post by: bobtonks on Thursday 21 November 19 12:52 GMT (UK)
John Tonks married Emma Beddall 1828. John was a boatman. They had 9 (nine) children. Four died young. Two, Reuben (1852) and William (1837) I have traced. Three children, Mary(1833), John(1835) & Susanna (1849), I have little or no information. I found Susanna in 1861.

I recently obtained the death certificate for John Tonks (snr). He died in 1857 age 51 years. The certificate states that John Tonks was "in attendance" Brockmore, Kingwinford. I am assuming this is his son, John (1835).
A search of the 1861 census offers a number of contenders. I've eliminated one or two.

1861 living Brockmore RG09 2071.   John Tonks (1831) mar Elizabeth Morgan (1831) in 1854. Kiddiminster - John’s father was Samuel Tonks

John Tonks mar Henrietta Turley 1862 Dudley. Both living Princes End, Tipton in 1861.  RG09 2043. I think John's parents were John & Martha.

Possible is John Tonks mar Betsy Church 1862 Brierley Hill. Father John Tonks  1861 living Enfield RG09 800. It's not clear where he was born. (Staffordshire)

Any suggestions?

Looks as though your third option for marriage is correct-John Tonks married Betsey Church 3/7/1862.  The information that makes this pretty certain is that there is additional info. on FreeREG that states his Father was John Tonks- Boatman. Baptised 29/3/1835.
Can't find Susanna apart from the 1861 census where it says she is a relative aged 12 years.
May have found Mary who possibly went to the USA-if it is her she had 9 children in total and died in 1924 in Auburn New York. She was baptised 9/6/1833 Father John Tonks Boatman (on FreeREG) She was married 16/12/1850 in Dudley Worcs to Joseph Price. The remaining info. is from a tree on A******y which you would need to check out for yourself.
Regards.

Thank you for looking. I'd forgotten about FreeReg.
I have now also found  John Tonks married Betsy Poxon 1855 Dudley. I think Poxon should be Foxon. However, having looked in FreeReg at the marriage of John Tonks & Betsey Church 1862 and confirmed your find I think my info of John/Betsy living Enfield is, I believe, the wrong John.

Just need to find John & Betsy (née Church) in the census

Thank you again and well found.

Hi

I realise this is rather an old thread, but I wanted to just check this. I have only been able to find eight children for John Tonks and Emma Beddall, probably due to my novice searching skills.
I have Keziah (1830–1835)
Mary (1833–1922)
John (1835–1880)
William (1837–1900)
Joseph (1839–1839)
Ann Maria (1843–)
Susanna (1849–)
Reuben (1852–1924)
would anyone by able to help me to track down number nine please. thank you

I have Heziah Tonks 1830 - 1835.

The missing child, I think, is Sarah Tonks 1846 - 1846 (mother Beddard).

I'm not a 100% sure because the death is recorded in qtr 1 18/341
and the birth is recorded in qtr 2 18/524

Thank you.
I started off with Heziah, which I think is a male name, but I think based on what I saw somewhere, possibly Free reg I changed it to Keziah and female. Thank you for the information about Sarah.
I hope you don't mind but I think I might be asking more questions as I try to unravel the Tonks family history, John and Emma's son Reuben was my great grandfather so I think we are related.
Best wishes

In 1861 Susannah Tonks is living with her mother who remarried Thomas Wood 28 Dec 1857 not long after John Tonks had died. Thomas was also a boatman.

FTR.
John and Emma had another daughter, Emma, who was born Q1 1845 and died Q2 1845.

I still haven't found what happed to Susannah 1849 (after 1861) and Sarah 1846.

I also can't find Reuben Tonks 1852, or Reuben George Tonks 1879 in the 1911 and 1921 census.

I think Reuben George was possibly living with his brother Willam and sisters Mary & Lily at 808 Coventry Rd in 1921.

Although he was not recorded in the 1921 census a Reuben is in the electoral Register for that year.

Reuben snr looks to be in Hadley, Shropshire in 1911, as a lodger. Ancestry have his forename as Ruben - he's an engineer in a brickworks b Birmingham.

1921 still a lodger in Hadley - age is slightly out (b 1856) but place of birth and occupation fit

possible death in Wellington district of Shropshire in 1924
